Day (United States of America)Assists pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications including parenteral admixtures. Follows established policies and procedures and performs all functions required of a Pharmacy Technician I.Job Description:
Department Specific Responsibilities: Functions as a Pharmacy Technician in all the areas that technical personnel are usually assigned:
Fills patient medication drawers in the Unit Dose Medication System and delivers same to Nursing Units according to predetermined schedule.
Repackages bulk medications in accordance with department needs, as required, and records all necessary information in the Packaging Log.
Accurately prepares medications to be restocked in the Pyxis Medstation.
Accurately performs charge/credit posting from various fill lists and floor stock requisitions.
Maintains control records for controlled substances and tax-free alcohol usage, as required. Responsible for exercising maximum security precautions.
Assists in the preparation and delivery of DEA controlled substances to Nursing Units, if required.
Fills drug orders for floor stock and kits for the operating room, recovery room, radiology, intensive care, and other departments and specialty areas, as necessary.
Prepares extemporaneous mixtures of medications, as needed.
- Assists pharmacist in the preparation of outpatient prescriptions.
- Assists with the monthly inspection of nursing units and specialty areas.
- Uses computer to generate daily reports, fill lists, labels.
- Answers telephone when necessary and refers technical questions directly to a pharmacist.
- Covers other technician's scheduled time as requested.
- Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel in a courteous manner.
- Assists R.Ph. on patient care areas with daily medication administration record reviews.
- Assists R.Ph. on patient care areas with Pyxis inventory control and expiration date inspections.
- Maintains work area in a clean and neat condition.
Takes appropriate actions when identifying a patient in a wandering gown or high risk of falling (which is signified by yellow smiley face on patient door).Mixes and prepares parenteral solutions when assigned to the IV Admixture Room:
Responsible for preparing the following sterile solutions utilizing strict aseptic technique:
- IV antibiotics
- Epidural solutions
- narcotic infusions
- TPN solutions
- large volume infusions
- miscellaneous intermittent IV’s
- Accurately prepares stop order flags.
- Expedites IV orders in a timely fashion.
- Updates Refrigerator/QA monitoring logs daily.
- Restocks admixture room as needed.
- Accurately delivers IV solutions to nursing units.
- Maintains work area in a clean and neat condition.
- Accurately performs charge/credit posting for IV antibiotics and solutions returned from the nursing units. Performs other related duties as required. Attends annual safety review. Plans time away from work appropriately: Arrives and leaves at designated times.
