The Executive Director, Coding and Education oversees all operations and projects of the Professional and HIM Coding departments. S/he reports directly to and works closely with the Sr. Vice President/Chief Revenue Officer in building and leading the coding departments’ daily operations, development and operational implementation of strategic goals, systems, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) intiatives, processes, protocols, process improvement, and workflow to ensure compliant, efficient, and fiscally responsible departmental operations while meeting regulatory guidelines for quality and compliance as well as the goals of Lahey Health. The Executive Director works with the VP/CRO to develop and direct the implementation of programs and services, establish and maintain relationships with the coding staff, and supports achievement of both the system’s strategic goals and revenue cycle goals in collaboration with other departments, clinical and non-clinical. Works independently to develop and provide direction in support of quality initiatives, as well as other programs to achieve system and LHMC goals. Supervises professional staff including an Associate Director of Professional Coding, Professional Coding Managers and Supervisors, HIM Coding Managers and Supervisors, and Project Managers. The Executive Director is also responsible for specialty initiatives, provider education initiatives and technology advancement.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1) Monitors departmental performance in relation to established goals and standards as well as development, implementation, and adherence of new policies and procedures as indicated to continually improve operational efficiencies and quality of the services provided. 2) Develops, implements, and assures adherence to new policies and procedures as needed to meet regulatory requirements for coding compliance. 3) Mentors departmental directors/managers/supervisors to properly follow personnel policies and procedures in conjunction with hiring, training, discipline, discharge and evaluation of coding department staff. Monitors work flows, schedules, education, mentoring and staffing to ensure effective use of personnel. 4) Mentors departmental directors/managers to meet departmental standards for quality and quantity of work performed in conjunction with meeting departmental and clinic goals and objectives. Works with managers to effectively prioritize and meet needs of the department and the organization while maintaining compliance and meeting regulatory requirements. 5) Develops, implements, and monitors statistical reporting for senior management, clinical departments, and coding department, as well as other revenue cycle related areas. Develops and monitors key performance indicators for all department goals, including timeliness and accuracy of all coding, adherence to policies and procedures, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), internal and external audits, internal and external contracted work. 6) Oversees the overall management of the department. 7) Plans, implements, and monitors process improvement initiatives and technical solutions while meeting organizational as well as departmental missions and goals. 8) Develops, monitors, and manages the budget(s) and use of resources effectively to provide high quality, cost

effective services. 9) Works collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes, and integrate services and technical solutions within the department and with other departments at Lahey Health. 10) Identifies issues, problems or areas requiring improvement or resolutions. 11) Assures training for coding, compliance, and any other training needs including but not limited to mandatory education or any other training or communication for continuing education of coding staff. 12) Assures training for coding, compliance, and/or electronic solutions to physicians, clinical staff, management or other as needed. 13) Keeps VP/CRO apprised of issues, problems or challenges facing the coding department and works effectively with other departments and or management staff to resolve them. Attends meetings and interacts with other managers or senior level management as needed. 14) Assists VP/CRO and other senior leadership with special projects as needed. 15) Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities. 16) Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies. 17) Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Health. 18) Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients. 19) Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment. 20) Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards. 21) Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities. 22) Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education. 23) Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Perform all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred

Licensure, Certification &

Registration: Coding Certificate from College Level Coding Program (or equivalent), and CPC, CCS-P, COC, or CCS preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 5-10 years leadership experience in revenue cycle operations with proven track record of improved financial outcomes, building relationships, improving workflows and successful technology implementations preferably in a healthcare setting.
