Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

Functions as a conduit for all patient-care related information between attendings, consultants, housestaff, nursing, and other staff.  Determines and relays to other providers, as appropriate, modified treatment plans and/or other interventions.

Provides first-level response to acute changes in patient status or complications, and initiates appropriate measures.

Performs daily patient rounds and follow-up for cardiothoracic patients including physical examination, and diagnostic and therapeutic intervention. 

Orders routine laboratory and diagnostic studies, medications, and consultations for patients on the service, to be co-signed within 24 hours by a physician involved in the patient's care.  Documents on a daily basis in the permanent medical record the patient status and further plan based on interpreted data.

Elicits a detailed history, performs physical examinations, writes assessments and orders, and presents pertinent data for all cardiothoracic surgical admissions.  Assists the physician staff in requirements for hemodynamic monitoring and overall preparation of the patient for surgery.

Assists in the Operating Room, including harvesting saphenous veins, closing leg incisions, and first assisting with operative procedures.

Performs the skills as outlined in the CT physician assistant delineation of privileges.

Orients medical students, physician assistant students, surgical interns, and junior surgical residents to Mount Auburn Hospital patient-care practices and hospital policies and procedures.

Attends cardiothoracic morbidity and mortality monthly rounds, and may be on hospital committees.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Graduate of the American Medical Association and an American Academy of Physician Assistant (AAPA)-approved PA training program. Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification is preferred.

Surgical experience preferred, including operating experience and experience in performing or assisting with acute hospital-level surgical procedures.

Board certification as outlined by the Massachusetts State Board of Registration of Physician Assistants.

Excellent interpersonal skills for positive interaction with patients, physicians, and other staff.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Normal patient care and operating room environment, with risk of exposure to infectious disease.
