Job Summary
The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) assists the surgeon in performing a safe surgical approach with optimal results for the patient. The RNFA practices perioperative nursing inclusive of the intraoperative phase. The RN has acquired skill and knowledge through a certified educational program or an organizational program with supervised clinical practice. The RNFA is responsible to the Operating Room Nurse Manager; however, the RNFA is under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon during the interaoperative phase of the perioperative role.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Assist with the room preparation for the procedure.
2. Assist with the appropriate positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.
3. Provides homeostasis through clamping blood vessels, use of cautery and ligation of vessels.
4. Provides the surgeon with proper exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging technique.
5. Demonstrates satisfactory knot tying and tissue suturing technique.
6. Demonstrates satisfactory ability to close the wound using different techniques.
7. Application of dressing materials and assists with the safe transfer from the Operating Room and participates in the report
Required Qualifications
1. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
2. Three years operating room experience required
3. Proficient in perioperative nursing practice as both a Scrub nurse and a circulator.
.4 Successful completion of RNFA educational program. BSN preferred.
5. Ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
6. Provides evidence that the established MAH policy related to credentialing of RNFA has been fulfilled or accomplished
7. Provides evidence the Nursing Division of MAH policy related to credentialing of RNFA has been fulfilled.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Normal hospital environment.
2. Exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and other toxic agents.
3. Ability to stand and walk approximately 90% of the time, to push and pull heavy objects (including patients), and to lift up to 50 lbs.
