The BILH Coder position is available with a fully remote or hybrid option. We are currently recruiting for experienced coders to support our hospital based coding teams.

A Professional Certified Coder is a key role in our expansive BILH System Services Revenue Cycle Department. As a Medical Coder you will utilize your accredited certified coding experience and education in a variety of tasks associated with coding physician charges.

Under the direction of the Hospital Coding Manager or Supervisor, and exercising independent judgment within the scope of the job, the Hospital Inpatient Coder 2 assigns applicable ICD-10 Codes, Present on Admission (POA), Hospital Acquired Condition (HAC), and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) using current industry standards, the Official Coding Guidelines, Coding Clinic, UHDDS and regulatory requirements.

Job Description:

Do you have a high level of proficiency in the coding needs for ICD-10, and CPT® coding of outpatient professional charges? A Professional Certified Coder can be a great position for someone with experience with hands-on coding, documentation review for internal and external audits, coding dictionary updates, rejections and denials, surgical coding, physician or other care provider education.

We have a great career ladder trajectory and internal opportunities in a variety of coding specialties including Hospital based coding at the Coder I, 2 and 3 levels.

Duties include but are not limited to:

·       Selects and sequences principal, secondary, and procedure based on provider medical record information to ensure accurate DRG assignment and reimbursement. 

·       Assigns applicable ICD-10 Codes, Present on Admission (POA), Hospital Acquired Condition (HAC), and Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) codes using current industry guidelines from (but not limited to), AHIMA, Coding Clinic, CMS, specific payers, Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) and CDC (official coding guidelines).   

·       Utilizes grouper software to assist with assignment of accurate codes and to calculate appropriate DRG for hospital reimbursement. 

·       Applies a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology and coding systems to accurately assign diagnoses and procedures in accordance with department, hospital, and regulatory requirements.

You will collaborate with colleagues across the organization, impact critical organizational revenue streams and gain valuable experience working with our Epic EHR system. We offer flexible working hours (shifts start as early as 7am or you can work as late as 6PM) with a comprehensive benefit program.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

·       Minimum High School degree or equivalent; college degree highly desirable.

Licensure, Certification & Registration:


Minimum five years of hospital inpatient coding experience and/or an RN or other healthcare clinician with at least 5 years acute care experience (e.g., medical-surgical, ICU, case management, etc.).
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Knowledge of Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and coding clinical concepts such as gained from coding coursework.
Knowledge of payment methodologies including prospective payment (PPS), federal and state regulations.
Computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and encoder.
Ability to work in a high paced, high volume, multi-task environment.
Strong organization and communication skills.
