Beth Israel Lahey Health Quincy Specialty Center is seeking a Medical Assistant / Cast Technician for the new Quincy location.
The Medical Assistant/Cast Technician will perform a wide variety of medical assisting activities during patient visits in an outpatient setting. Perform skilled technical work in the fabrication, application and removal of cast/splints, and the application and removal of orthopedic devices. This position involves extensive interaction with diverse populations including patients, medical staff practitioners and other personnel. Reports to the Director or their designee with competency assessment input from assigned physicians and physician extenders.
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, typical hours 8am-4:30pm although some variation based on provider schedules.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform a wide variety of patient care activities during patient visits and/or procedures. May include, but not limited to; taking/recording vital signs, height and weight, EKGs, phlebotomy, suture removal and assisting during procedures.
Assist physician or other medical staff providers with orthopedic casting procedures to include but not limited to the application and removal of a variety of casts and splints, the application of mobilization or immobilization devices and other orthopedic devices as well as the fitting and adjustment of canes, crutches and walkers.
Provide continuity of post-op care casting, splinting and bracing, accurately document all treatment in patient medical records. Instruct patients on various subjects, including cast care, wound care, how to remove and apply splints, etc.
Opens and closes assigned exam rooms/corridors daily. Ensure that equipment and supplies necessary to carry out patient care activities are available and usable and the environment is clean, organized, and stocked appropriately.
Monitor patients entering, waiting or leaving the exam area. Facilitates timely flow referring issues to the designated patient flow coordinator.
Assist patients who have physical and psychological limitations with ambulation and patient care functions to ensure their comfort and dignity during the exam. May include transferring a patient from a wheelchair to exam table, undressing and dressing patients and ensuring patient is safe until provider arrives.
Communicate with and assists patients, other employees and the general public in a courteous, helpful manner by phone and in person.
Take complete, accurate information from patients, prioritizing and communicating to clinical staff appropriately. Distribute questionnaires and forms to patient at the beginning of visit. Enter orders and information relating to the patient visit in the electronic medical record as assigned.
Escort patients to ancillary service areas such as radiology and lab as needed. Perform other support activities as requested by managers or clinical providers in order to provide for patient needs in an optimal way.
Collect patient record upon completion of visit. Schedule next Center appointment in related EMRs. May schedule related diagnostic and/or lab tests. Obtain required insurance prior authorization for testing.
Track, order, and maintain supplies and equipment which may include monitoring code cart supplies. Ensure that supplies are within expiration dates.
Clean and disinfect medical equipment used for patient care between each patient use according to guidelines as required by the center.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Registers patients, verifying demographics and insurance, in required EMRs as assigned to provide front desk coverage.
Attends internal or external educational or training sessions as assigned. May be assigned off-shifts, holidays, and weekends, and may work additional hours beyond schedule when needed to provide for patient services or in an emergency/disaster.
Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
May be required to perform similar or related duties reflective of the level of experience as may be necessary on an emergency, temporary or limited basis or as designated by the Director of the Center or their designee.
Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow universal precautions for infection control.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Min Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of program as Certified Medical Assistant preferred. Associates degree preferred
Min Experience: Minimum 2 years related work experience required and in an orthopedic outpatient setting preferred. Casting experience preferred.
License/Certification: Current CPR certification
Skills: Basic familiarity with computers. Navigate at a basic level within web-based applications. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little or no supervision. Oral/written Communication: Ability to read and write in English in order to understand basic safety.
BID Milton is offering a $1,000 signing bonus (in two payments over 6 months) to hired candidates for this position. Candidates will receive 500 on the pay period following date of hire and 500 once they reach six months of employment.
Important Details:
• Employees applying internally from within BID Milton or another BILH entity are not eligible for this signing bonus program.
• Re-hires may receive signing bonuses if they terminated their employment with BID Milton more than a year before new hire date. This includes students, volunteers and interns who have worked (paid or unpaid) at BID Milton
• New employees must be in good standing at the bonus payout dates to receive payout.
• Candidates who are referred by a current employee will receive their bonus as part of the employee referral program. Candidates may not receive both a signing bonus and a referral bonus.
• Bonus eligible jobs are subject to change based on the hospital's hiring needs and will be determined by Human Resources on an ongoing basis. HR reserves the right to change the bonus eligible jobs at any time. Additionally, all payouts are subject to standard state and federal tax withholdings and are processed through payroll!
