Beth Israel Milton is currently seeking a per diem Medical Secretary for our Pathology Department.

POSITION FUNCTION
Performs a wide variety of secretarial, clerical and other departmental duties relative to the medical and professional business of the Laboratory Director, Pathologists, Anatomic pathology supervisor, and the Laboratory, in general.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
•Acts as a general secretary to the Pathology Department. Requires knowledge of medical terminology.
•Pick up Surgical and Cytology specimens from different areas of the Hospital numerous times during the day. Requires significant walking.
•Documents specimen problems as directed and according to policy
•Register and accession all surgical and cytology specimens.
•Responsible for calling doctors’ offices, floors and other departments to obtain or correct patient/specimen information.
•Provides assistance in Quality Assurance Program.
•Accurate filing slides and blocks as needed.
•Participates in workflow improvements
•Maintain clean laboratory space as directed and according to policy.
•Prepare specimens for any required send out testing.
•Maintains patient records and cross-reference files, and sends billing information and general laboratory mailing.
•Maintains necessary office supplies.
•Answers telephones in a manner according to Laboratory policy, takes and relays message accurately to the appropriate person. Communicates Lab procedures and policies to non-Laboratory personnel.
•Communicates with physicians, patients, and other institutions regarding patient records. Read and maintains Communication Log daily. Communicates to next shift significant events.
•Greets visitors, maintains professional manner and respects patient’s confidentiality even under adverse situations.
•Prepares departmental and section reports/logs, maintains departmental and committee report files, transcribes procedures and policies for section supervisor and Pathologists.
•May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency, temporary or limited basis as assigned.
•Performs add duties in accordance with the safety and other laws, rules, and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

Position reports to: Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and Laboratory Director

Position supervises: N/A
Internal relationships: (works closely with): Laboratory Director, Pathologist, Laboratory Manager, other Laboratory staff, Nursing staff, Physicians
External relationships: Patients, Physicians, Clients, Vendors, other hospital co-workers

QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses or Certificates: N/A
Total education, vocational training and experience: (minimum requirements of candidate)
Equivalent to the completion of high school. Proficient in medical terminology.
