Reporting to the Supervisor of Mail and Motor Services, this position is responsible for the safe operation of a van, mini-van, truck, or bus to transport employees, volunteers, patients, and visitors. Responsibilities also include pick up and delivery of mail, specimens, equipment, etc. as scheduled or instructed by the Supervisor, Mail & Motor Services, or Director of Hospitality Services/ Parking & Commuter Service Operations.

Job Description:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Driver/Courier must be aware of and adhere to all state and federal motor carrier guidelines (including DOT safety regulations) as well as all department and Medical Center policies and procedures.

2. Pick up and deliver:

  • Specimen to and from medical facilities.

  • Incoming mail from the Post Office.

  • Supplies and equipment from each campus and off-site locations as needed.

3. Transport:

  • Ambulatory patients to and from off-site locations such as Chelsea, Brookline, and other locations as needed.

  • Patients and employees between East and West Campus.

4. Conduct daily vehicle and periodic inspections to ensure operability.

5. Complete accurate daily and periodic inspection records; fill out incident reports as necessary.

6. Perform routine maintenance as outlined by vehicle’s manufacturer and in conjunction with the Supervisor. Routine maintenance includes fuel fill up, oil change, Notify Supervisor of more complex repair needs and bring vehicles to repair shops as directed.

7. Perform other duties as required.   

Required Qualifications:
1.    High School diploma or GED required.
2.    0-1 years related work experience required.
3.    Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
1.    CDL license with passenger endorsement preferred.

3.    Independence of Action: Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.

4.    Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

5.    Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

6.    Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

7.    Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.

8.    Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.

Social/Environmental Requirements:
1.    Work needs to occur at an average pace with intermittent breaks. Requires an average amount of attention to maintain quality of work.

2.    Work is fairly routine from day to day. Employee follows a set pattern with any changes being communicated by supervisor.

3.    No substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions

4.    Health Care Status:  NHCW: No patient contact.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department

Sensory Requirements:
Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity > 20 feet, Visual clarity <3 feet, Hot/Cold, Sharp/Dull, Smell, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone, Background Noise.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
This job requires frequent sitting, walking, twisting neck, twisting waist, Power Grasping using both hands, Fine Manipulation using both hands, Pushing/Pulling using both hands.There may be occasional standing, bending neck, bending waist, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 10 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 25 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 50 lbs.Rarely there may be Keyboard use, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 75 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs, Push a wheelchair or wheeled bed containing a patient weighing up to 250 pounds, with assistance.
