Job Summary: The ICP1 participates in the Infection Control/ Hospital Epidemiology program by assisting the senior ICPs and hospital epidemiologists in activities including surveillance, data collection, education and research. This position is an entry level position within infection control with a focus on acquiring knowledge and skills in infection prevention and is designed as the first step in a four level career ladder from novice to expert. Key job functions will include routine surveillance for resistant organisms and DPH reportable infections as well as data collection by direct observation of hand hygiene performance and environmental cleaning.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Perform surveillance on DPH reportable diseases with reporting to city and state agencies as required and multidrug-resistant organisms with contact of inpatient units to isolate patients as needed, including data entry.
  2. Perform direct observation of basic infection control practices, staff hand hygiene and post-discharge cleaning evaluations of inpatient rooms, including data entry and communication with unit leadership.
  3. Complete required training and education including in-person training, online courses (microbiology, general infection control, statistics), and assigned readings. Complete OR online training.
  4. Work toward completion of training in healthcare-associated infection surveillance (bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections).
  5. Assist primary ICP content expert assigned to a particular inpatient unit or service line in unit observation, surveillance, and unit-based staff education.
Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Infection Control, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Statistics preferred.
  2. License Registered Nurse preferred.
  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  4. Professional licensure in related field (RN, MT, etc) must be maintained as active.
  5. Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. 1-3 years of related work experience preferred.

  2. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  3. Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.
  4. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.
  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
