Job Summary: A chaplain provides non-judgmental spiritual care to BIDMC patients, families, and staff regardless of faith tradition. Chaplains are responsible for: spiritual assessment, timely documentation in the online medical record, communication with other members of the care team, on-call coverage, and occasionally presiding at community events at the medical center. Must have energy for teamwork and outreach.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Provides chaplaincy services to patients and families that address personal, spiritual, emotional, psychosocial issues that patient or family may wish to discuss.
  2. Visit all patients who request chaplaincy services or are referred by social worker, nurse, patient, physician, family in distress. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams as appropriated.
  3. Provides timely and appropriate documentation in patient's medical record. Provides consultation and education to team on patient-family management as appropriate.
  4. Presents and/or discusses clinical/pastoral work in formal and informal settings and seminars. May be selected by the director to present clinical & spiritual material and theory at teaching conferences and seminars.
  5. Participates in supervision as appropriate to level of professional development. Serves as a mentor and/or training resource to less experienced staff. Supports environment of idea sharing and feedback. Seeks opportunities and sets goals for own professional development. Identifies and learns from mentors.
Required Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in Divinity Studies or related degree required.
  2. License Assoc. of Clinical Pastoral Ed preferred., and minimum of 2 units of education
  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  4. Completion of a minimum of 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education at an accredited site.
  5. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education at an accredited site is preferred.
  2. Chaplain certification by a nationally recognized certifying organization (APC, NACC, NAJC) or certification eligible.
  3. Previous experience in a Level I hospital and Bilingual (Spanish, Portuguese) is preferred.

  1. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
  2. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring, requiring staff input, innovative, creative, and Lean diagnostic techniques to resolve issues.
  3. Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and determines how to accomplish defined results with some guidelines. Manager/Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.
  4. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situations, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
