The Perfusionist reports to the Chief of Perfusion Services. This position is responsible for conducting Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) at a level of competence determined by quality measures set by MAH Quality Department/Quality Improvement Plan and in accordance with the Code of Ethics established by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). This position requires autonomy and appropriate clinical judgement. MAH is an adult only cardiac center with perfusion covering many clinical departments for cell savers, ACTs, & limited ECMO.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates cardiopulmonary perfusion equipment whenever CPB is indicated. Manages anticoagulation, proper acid-base balance, overall cardiovascular tone and administration of fluids, including blood products, during CPB. 
  • Selects circuits and techniques appropriate for proper perfusion management. Recognizes and responds to significant changes in patient parameters during CPB. Responsible for intra-aortic balloon pumps in the Operating Room and transport of patients on the intra-aortic balloon pump from the Operating Room to the Intensive Care Unit.
  • No VAD or transplants, but must be capable of setting up, priming, and operating Cardiohelp ECMO
  • Prepares adequately for CPB by thorough preoperative review and evaluation of the patient’s history. Assists in research related to cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass. This may include operation of CPB equipment, physiologic and hemodynamic monitoring and data collection. Collects cardiac surgery data.
  • Operates autologous blood recovery devices and collection of data relating to the Autologous Blood Recovery Program of MAH in various clinical departments
  • Participates in quality control of perfusion equipment when required. 

Required Qualifications

  • American Board Certified eligible in CPB
  • Licensed Perfusionist in Massachusetts or provisional 
  • 0-1 years related work experience
  • Certification as Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) preferred. Must obtain CCP within 2 years after hire date and maintain yearly certification.  
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
