The Physical Therapist IV opportunity is a 16hr/week position working onsite in Chelsea, for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Job Description:

The Physical Therapist IV (PT IV) in this position is autonomously responsible for examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis intervention and discharge planning for the PT needs of patients who have potential for functional impairments, limitations and disabilities who are referred to physical therapy. Additional responsibilities of a PT IV include the roles and responsibilities associated with being a clinical expert in a designated specialty area.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate patients, discuss findings and plan of care with patient, implement plan of care, regularly re-evaluate patient status and plan of care.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in providing care to a diverse patient population approximately 85% of the time. Provide clinical guidance, staff triage, program development or clinical research as needed 15% of the time.
  • Act as initiator, developer, leader and program resource for designated clinical programs. Develop program proposals, standards of service, measures of quality, and publications in this area of expertise. Gather, analyze and review statistics and outcome measures with recommendations for improvement.
  • Re-evaluate programs for optimal quality and effectiveness; make recommendations for change. Function as a resource and / or consultant to contacts external to the department / hospital relative to content specialty through teaching and formal presentations to professional or community organizations and participation in own professional organization.
  • Participate in department/hospital wide quality assurance, task forces or work groups to develop plans for clinical and operations improvement strategies and assessment of service delivery standards. Maintain relationships with other department managers to develop and coordinate department/hospital wide initiatives.
  • Conduct or direct research relative to clinical practice which enhances professional standards of practice. Work closely with department / medical center staff to design questions, obtain appropriate permissions, gather and analyze data and publish results as appropriate.
  • Perform teaching responsibilities including but not limited to: teaching patients and families, teaching and supervising students, preparing and presenting in-services, and educational lectures in and outside of the department and the medical center.
  • Mentor, orient and assess competence and ongoing performance of less experienced therapists, therapist assistants, rehab aides, practice assistants, and support personnel and communicate results to managers or supervisors.
  • Demonstrate initiative, seek opportunities, accept additional responsibilities and set professional goals in areas of program development, teaching, quality assurance, performance improvement, research, and administration as appropriate to meet identified department or service needs.
  • Support an environment of idea sharing and exchange of feedback with staff across the service and department.
  • Manage a defined caseload and perform all administrative responsibilities including but not limited to: data collection and record keeping e.g. billing, face-time sheets, QAI activities, participation on departmental committees as requested, and attendance at department meetings and in-services as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy required. Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy preferred.
  • License Physical Therapist License required., and Certificate 1 Basie Life Support required. 
  • More than 10 years related work experience required. 
  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • APTA membership.
  • Certified Clinical Specialist

  • Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring, requiring staff input, innovative, creative, and Lean diagnostic techniques to resolve issues. 
  • Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and determines how to accomplish defined results with some guidelines.
  • Manager/Director provides broad guidance and overall direction. 
  • Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers. 
  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations. 
  • Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments. 
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual clarity feet, Hot/Cold, Sharp/Dull, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone, Background Noise.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
