To provide direct patient care and clinical assessment of Orthopedic patients. Works in close cooperation with the Orthopedic Surgeons in the Department. Acts as liaison for nursing and ancillary health professionals.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Develops a database on individuals by obtaining a health history, physical examination, laboratory data and other diagnostic testing, as indicated.

  • Makes accurate identification of problems/diagnosis based upon correct interpretation of findings.

  • Develops an appropriate plan of care including diagnostic testing, consultation and/or referrals to other health care team members.

  • Assists patients in meeting health needs by identifying potential or existing problems, exploring available alternatives and providing support to the patient to make an informed decision regarding health care.

  • Provides patient teaching in relation to the procedure and general health issues as needed.

  • Consults with Medical Staff members for guidance in complex assessments.

  • Works with medical staff physicians to ensure that protocols are appropriate to the patient population being seen.

  • Communicates to the attending/primary care physician and/or consultants, any care plan being initiated.

  • Works closely with physician, physical therapists and internal case manager to coordinate care.

  • Participates in appropriate operating committees.

  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively express one’s ideas in a discussion of professional issues.

  • Reviews diagnostic tests and laboratory results and makes appropriate decisions for follow-up of abnormal findings.

  • Initiates treatment for patients following established protocols.

  • Maintains confidentiality of interventions.

  • Participates in and/or provides educational programs.

  • Participates in an on-going learning process of continuing education.

  • Participates in hospital/nursing committees, as requested.

  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities of the department.

  • Demonstrates the ability to initiate emergency treatment when indicated i.e. perform CPR, initiate Code protocol.

  • Plans time away from work appropriately:

  • Arrives and leaves at appropriate times based on OR schedule and patient load on floors.

  • Uses unplanned earned time appropriately (Based on full time hours.  Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours).

  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Participates in annual safety review.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Nurse Practitioner License, license and certified in the Commonwealth of MA

  • Basic Life Support certification required preferred by AHA/RC

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification required preferred by AHA/RC

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s Degree required

  • Graduate of an accredited PA program or masters prepared in an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-3 years of experience

Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
