Job Description:

Reporting to and under the direction of the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Ambulatory Nursing is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating nursing and clinical practice within the Ambulatory service line (primary care, specialty clinics).  This position serves as the key nurse leader, working with other clinical and business leaders at all levels of the BILH organization. As a member of the Lahey nursing leadership team, the Director supports a nursing environment as outlined in the ANA Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, the MA Nurse Practice Act and ANA Code of Ethics. He/She fosters collaborative practice in chronic disease management and evidence based practice that ensures optimal care for patients. This role works collaboratively with ambulatory service line Executive Directors to ensure financial, quality, service, and human resource goals of the medical center are being achieved.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

Clinical and Regulatory Knowledge

  • Applies knowledge of safe nursing practice can care delivery systems to ambulatory setting
  • Directs the development, interpretation, implementation and maintenance of standards of nursing practice, policies, and procedures
  • Ensures compliance with State Board of Nursing and regulatory agencies i.e., Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, and Centers for Medicare/Medicaid outpatient conditions of participation
  • Ensures compliance with HIPPA and patient privacy regulations
  • Oversees quality reporting programs, where applicable
  • Ensures compliance with value based care reimbursement models and other payment processes
  • Applies evidence-based practice to optimize clinical practice
  • Upholds patient safety systems, identifies risks and develops mitigation strategies
  • Accountable for patient care quality improvement goals and objectives. Works collaboratively with Department of Quality and Safety to ensure process improvement
  • Accountable leader for evaluating and implementing best practice in patient experience and patient centered care within the ambulatory setting

Business Skills  

  • Collaborates with Executive Directors to co-manage business model and develop business plans for operational growth
  • Collaborates with Executive Directors to develop, monitor and maintain operation and capital budgets
  • Reports business and financial standings to senior leadership
  • In collaboration with the Division Chief, serves as a clinical expert for new business and operational ventures
  • Implements Lean or process improvement methodologies to optimize workflow, patient experience, or clinical outcomes
  • Measures and analyzes performance of departmental and organizational processes and outcomes against benchmark data
  • Collaborates with Executive Directors to monitor, evaluate, and respond to industry changes and local and regional competition
  • Collaborates with HR Business Partner to develop and implement employee performance improvement plans
  • Evaluates workforce and skill mix; engages in workforce redesign when necessary to optimize outcomes

Information Management and Technology

  • Demonstrates competency in business applications and programs
  • Uses hospital database management and clinical systems to access and analyze data
  • Identifies and demonstrates the use of benchmarking data to evaluate clinical practice and implement effective change
  • Demonstrates awareness of technology used in ambulatory setting; ensures safe and effective practice
  • Evaluates, plans and implements new technologies to optimize business and clinical goals

Communication and Relationship Building

  • Uses effective communication; able to make oral presentations to diverse audiences
  • Produces clear, concise, persuasive written material
  • Builds trusting collaborative relationships with peers, staff, physicians and other disciplines. Serves as liaison between nursing and other areas
  • Leads committees relevant to clinical practice areas
  • Resolves and manages conflict in a proactive and constructive manner
  • Engages staff and others in shared-decision making when possible. Promotes professional governance model in nursing practice

Leadership & Professionalism

  • Demonstrates critical decision-making skills; analyzes departmental and organizational issues and initiatives
  • Maintains curiosity and eagerness to explore new knowledge and ideas

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Master’s degree in nursing or business administration is required. DNP preferred. If an MBA is the highest degree earned, the undergraduate degree must be a BSN.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Current practice or eligible to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse; NE-BC, equivalent or higher is preferred and must be achieved within one year of hire. Clinical certification in the ambulatory setting is highly preferred.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: The successful candidate is a systems thinker with a high level of emotional intelligence and agility.  A high level of analytical skills is necessary to assess, develop and implement systems, policies and procedures.

Experience:   At least seven years of progressive leadership experience is required. Working within an academic medical system with multiple service lines and campus locations is highly preferred. At least five years of previous work experience must have been spent in an ambulatory or outpatient environment.

Pay Range:

$170,000.00 USD – $220,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
