SR. HISTOLOGY TECHNOLOGIST
Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for organizing, performing and assigning histology duties to staff and maintaining general efficiency in assigned areas. These responsibilities extend to all areas of the department in the absence of the Anatomic Pathology Manager, and to the pathology secretarial staff as it relates to the functioning of histology.

Responsible for maintaining efficient and safe workflow in assigned area, including scheduling of staff.

Responsible for ensuring total compliance with all signed approved SOP’s and technical procedures for oneself and all staff within the lab section. Adheres to all safety policies and procedures and monitors compliance.

Tests, assesses, develops, writes, verifies and implements new procedures according to current regulatory standards and based on the needs of the laboratory for the histology processing section. Is responsible for maintaining proper document control as per procedure.

Participates in the determination of equipment and personnel needs in assigned areas.

Evaluates equipment operation and preventative maintenance according to manufacturer’s recommendations and current regulatory standards. Reviews maintenance logs. Initiates corrective action, and maintains documentation of activities.

Responsible for reviewing and evaluating weekly, monthly and periodic quality control reports. Initiate and document corrective action. Troubleshoot out of control procedures with technicians in assigned areas on daily basis.

Prepares and assists in the CAP accreditation process, and ensures compliance with applicable state and other federal regulations that pertain to laboratory testing.

Responsible for maintaining inventory levels of reagents, supplies and quality control products in assigned area. Manages stock rotation and follows established procedures relating to verification of reagents and new lots of kits. Shares responsibility of ordering with Anatomic Pathology Manager.

Trains current and new employees in histology. Establishes training requirements and documents training and competencies based on current regulation standards and approved policies. Documents and provides information for performance evaluation on staff.

Initiates and leads quality and work flow improvement projects as necessary.

Assists with inter and intradepartmental communications. Communicates regularly with lab section, through multiple means which may include meetings, huddles and hard copy and email distribution of information.

Attends and participates in in-service education meetings and education seminars as requested.

Attends appropriate laboratory meetings.

Education/Experience Required:

B.S. in science related field (meeting CAP HT minimums for credit distribution) with minimum 5 years recent histology experience with progressively more responsibility OR Two year degree with recent supervisory experience

Requires strong organizational skills to prepare and maintain various documentation/reports, monitor activities of staff and ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

Requires leadership, group cohesion and communication skills promoting teamwork in support of group achievement, providing positive reinforcement of section performance.

Requires a full understanding of the role of the pathology support processes in assisting patient care and the responsibility of the laboratory to provide accurate and timely information to assist in positive patient outcomes in addition to the importance of maintaining positive working relationships with other staff members in the laboratory, the hospitals and client offices.

Requires a working understanding of pathology policies and in addition to the operation and maintenance of related equipment in order to support uninterrupted services in assigned areas.

Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with all internal and external customers, as needed.
Registration/Certification:

Physical/Environmental Requirements
This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
Pay Range:
$35.53 – $61.67
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
