SUMMARY
Responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of all building HVAC and other auxiliary equipment in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. Support the facility infrastructure and building systems in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. Works under the supervision of the manager.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
- Oversees operation of boilers and other auxiliary equipment necessary for the producing steam in compliance with Massachusetts law.
- Inspection of boiler plant every 5 of 7 days. Maintains log of inspections to include time and date of inspection, boiler operating status, and maintenance performed.
- Availability to be onsite within 1 hour of serious issues unless prior notification has been given to Manager
- Oversees and directs 3rd class Engineers, 1st class Firemen, and 2nd class Firemen in the policy, procedure and training of the operation and maintenance of the boiler plant including but not limited to:
(a) Give the boiler measured bottom blowdowns in accordance with instructions provided by the company supplying the feedwater treatment;
(b) Remove accumulations on water surfaces by using surface blow valves;
(c) Blowdown water column;
(d) Test low-water cutoff and feedwater regulator;
(e) Operate safety valves manually on start-up;
(f) Check lubrication on auxiliary equipment;
(g) When starting boilers, make sure the ignition operates properly; and keep the boiler room clean.
- Reports to the Manager about any unusual situation or emergency. Reports faulty operation to Manager if damage or problem is not within limits of their own standard methods or knowledge.
- Responds immediately to trouble calls throughout the hospital such as changing light bulbs, unplugging toilets, changing bed cords, heat calls, and taking readings and temperatures of air-conditioning and air-handling equipment as directed by Manager.
- Observes safety rules and regulations and performs other related duties when directed by the Manager.
- Maintains and operates a computerized energy management system.
- Performs all other assigned duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- High School diploma and successful completion of one year of boiler operations school or HVAC school.
- Second class engineer's license issued by the Department of Public Safety of Massachusetts.
- Knowledge of boiler operation and safety procedures normally acquired in five years of experience including some supervisory experience.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal supervisory and analytical skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Somewhat disagreeable working conditions; exposure to typical boiler room elements including heat, steam, hot water, oil and grease, etc. with one or the other usually present to the extent of being disagreeable.
- Ability to see dials/gauges and hear alarms and manipulate dials 100% of the time.
- Exposure to power tools and heavy equipment 100% of the time.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and climb stairs.

Pay Range:
$32.00 – $47.00
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
