The MRI Technologist performs MRI studies with minimal supervision in a safe, accurate and timely manner which is necessary to allow the Radiologist and/or physician to make a diagnosis. Performs a variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative and maintains quality consistent with established technical standards under the direction of the MRI Supervisor/MRSO, Chief of Radiology, MRI Medical Director and the Director of Radiology and Cardiology Services.
Job Description:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Following established departmental policies and procedures, is responsible for performing procedures utilizing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) equipment that includes preparing patients, setting imaging parameters, performing computer processing and displaying images with minimum supervision. Equipment includes all MRI equipment, power injectors, monitoring equipment, ferromagnetic detectors, point of care testing, etc.
2. Controls access to MRI zones. Instructs patients and visitors in MR safety procedures.
3. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient’s condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study. Completes requisitions, questionnaires and gathers sufficient and necessary information from the patient to assist the Radiologist in interpretation of procedure as necessary.
4. Screens patients for MRI safety and is responsible for proper positioning, coil placement and protocol selection.
5. Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate protocols and provides additional variations of techniques as required by Radiologist or protocol.
6. Performs venipuncture and administers IV contrast agents per Radiologist protocol.
7. Completes procedures in timely fashion while providing the highest quality studies. Demonstrates the ability to independently review studies for overall quality.
8. Performs QA on MRI scanner as required.
9. Provides service and care to patients of all ages and ailments/conditions. Monitors patient condition and if/when conditions are deemed necessary involves nursing, or physician and implements further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions when necessary.
10. Performs patient centered customer service and ensures the following standards are met appropriately and achieved. Communicates patient complaints professionally and directs them
to a supervisor or Director if unable to resolve. Ensures HIPAA compliance at all times and understands that all patient information is accessed on a need to know basis. Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations, private conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior.
11. Considers specific cultural beliefs and practices when caring for patients. Utilizes interpreter services for patients with limited English proficiency and ASL services for the deaf and hearing impaired.
12. Communicate with the reception staff to minimize patient waiting and ensure the highest level of patient satisfaction. Act as a resource for referring physicians, proceduralists and Radiologists.
13. Maintain work area in a clean and orderly fashion and adhere to all of the infection control standards, ensuring sanitary conditions. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
14. Provides and ensures use of all required personal protective safety equipment. Promotes a safe environment for all personnel.
15. Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations as set forth by appropriate licensing, credentialing, regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
16. Report equipment malfunction immediately to the MRI supervisor or the Director of Radiology.
17. Stock exam rooms with supplies. Ensure adequate inventory of supplies appropriate for the volume of testing. Minimize overstocking of supplies and keeps inventory stock to a minimum.
18. Familiar with emergency equipment and supplies within the department and respond to emergencies as they occur. Remains composed, reassuring and able to follow directions during emergency situations.
19. Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.
20. Collaborate, cooperate and communicate with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care.
21. Document and report all adverse events within MRI to the proper authorities in the hospital. Notifies the Director of Radiology and Cardiology Services of any situations from within or outside of the Department that result in difficulty carrying out departmental procedures. Enters events in appropriate reporting system.
22. Assist during the orientation of new staff members in the Radiology Department. Welcome and support new employees.
23. Accommodates patient needs and staffing needs through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
24. Maintain current ARRT credentials R.T. (MR) (ARRT). Maintain continuing education credits on site. Adhere to ethical standards for discipline.
25. Maintain active certification in BLS/Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
26. May be required to perform similar or related duties as necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department director or supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education: Graduate of an approved school that fulfills the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) requirements for primary or secondary pathway education in MRI.
Licensure/Certifications:
· Current ARRT registration (Advanced MRI certification)
· Current CEU credits, documenting compliance with CEU requirements
· BLS/CPR Certification required.
Experience: 1-4 years of MRI technologist work experience required. New graduates considered based on strong clinical references.
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology with the analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.
· Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.
· Positive, team oriented attitude and a professional appearance.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions and to interact with other staff technologists.

Pay Range:
$47.00 – $69.84
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
