Get to Know Your System CNO! Interview with Dr. Puneet Freibott, System Chief Nurse

We are excited to highlight Dr. Puneet Freibott, our System Chief Nurse. In this Q&A, Dr. Freibott shares more about her journey into nursing, what led her into leadership, and how she thinks about supporting and growing our nursing teams across the system. Her perspective offers a closer look at the values, culture, and commitment that shape the nursing experience at Beth Israel Lahey Health.

Question: What inspired you to become a nurse?

“My path into nursing was not something I planned or dreamed about growing up. In many ways, it feels like the universe gently steered me into the exact place where I was meant to be. What began as a step into the unknown quickly became a profound sense of purpose. Nursing found me—and I’m deeply grateful that it did. Once I entered this profession, I realized I had discovered a calling rooted in service, compassion, and connection. Being with people in their most vulnerable moments, supporting families, and witnessing the strength of the human spirit showed me that this is more than a career—it’s a privilege. Over time, I understood that nursing wasn’t just something I chose; it was something that aligned with who I am at my core. I often say it must have been the universe guiding me toward the right service industry, because I cannot imagine doing anything else. I’m grateful every day that this profession found me, and that I get to serve alongside extraordinary colleagues who bring heart and humanity to every patient we care for”

Question: What drew you into nursing leadership?

“I was drawn into nursing leadership because I believe leadership is fundamentally an act of service. Our nurses are the true marvels of healthcare—the ones who bring compassion, skill, and humanity to our most vulnerable patients. Stepping into leadership gave me the opportunity to remove barriers, amplify their voices, and ensure they have what they need to deliver exceptional care. Leading from the front means staying connected to the work, staying present with teams, and demonstrating through action that we rise and grow together.”

Question: What do you value most in a nursing culture?

“I value a culture where every nurse feels respected, supported, and seen. A culture where psychological safety is real, not aspirational. Where teamwork is grounded in trust, and where learning and improvement are embraced rather than feared. Most importantly, I value a culture where compassion flows both ways—toward patients and toward each other—because sustainable excellence lives at that intersection”

Question: How would you describe the nursing environment across our system?

“Our nursing environment is one of deep dedication and resilience. Across our system, nurses show up every day with purpose and heart—caring for complex patients, supporting families, and supporting one another. We are becoming increasingly aligned as a unified nursing community with shared standards, shared expectations, and shared pride. We have extraordinary talent at every site, and we are building a culture where collaboration replaces silos and where consistency strengthens both care quality and the nurse experience.”

Question: What should nurses considering joining us understand about how we support our teams?

“Nurses joining us should know that we invest in our people—not only in their clinical skills but in their growth, well being, and long term success. We believe strongly in developing our leaders, strengthening teamwork, and ensuring the resources and support structures are in place so nurses can practice at the top of their license. We listen. We partner. And we continually improve based on what our teams tell us they need. Our commitment is simple: no nurse succeeds alone here. We move forward together.”

Question: What keeps you energized and committed to this work?

“What keeps me energized is witnessing the courage and compassion of our nurses. Every day, they bring light into moments of vulnerability and uncertainty for our patients and families. Being able to support them—by advocating for them, celebrating them, and creating an environment where they can thrive—gives me purpose. I am inspired by their integrity, their perseverance, and their humanity. It is an honor to serve those who serve others.”
