Job Description:
Position Summary: The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12 month post-graduate program. The program will be structured based on the goals and objectives outlined in the ASHP Accreditation Standard for PGY1 Residencies in Pharmacy. The purpose of the program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training. Emphasis is on development of skills involving optimization of medication therapy outcomes through use of evidence-based medicine and independently functioning as part of a healthcare team. There are four core competency areas of the program with associated goals and objectives: Patient Care, Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care, Leadership and Management, Teaching, Education, Dissemination of Knowledge, Teaching, Education, Dissemination of Knowledge.
After an initial orientation period, the Pharmacy Resident will develop advanced professional practice skills by providing patient care through a variety of required and elective 5-week learning experiences, in addition to staffing in the central pharmacy and providing weekend clinical coverage throughout the year. Development of drug information and teaching skills in support of patient care will also be integrated throughout the year. Additional activities include participation in continuous quality improvement programs, the formulary process, drug policy and guideline development, investigational drug services, medication use evaluation, and by completing various administrative projects. A research project will be conducted suitable for presentation at the Eastern States Regional Residency Conference.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including
but not limited to:
1) Patient Care - establish a collaborative working relationship with health care providers; design, recommend, monitor and evaluate patient-specific therapeutic regimens ensuring that the unique nature of each patient is addressed; document direct patient-care activities appropriately 2) Hospital Practice - dispense medications using existing standards of practice and following institution’s and department’s policies and procedures, utilize pharmacy technical support effectively, assist with inventory control
3) Successfully complete all elements of the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC) Pharmacy PGY1 Residency Program (see
Program Curriculum for a description of these elements).
4) Practice Management - participate in the following: Adverse drug event review, development or modification of policies for
medication use, departmental planning processes, quality improvement programs, personnel management
5) Teaching – conduct case conferences, journal clubs, provide inservice education to health-care providers, CE programs for
pharmacy technicians, students, and pharmacists; co-precept pharmacy students, participation in Boston-area hospital
Residency Teaching Seminar Program to gain a teaching certificate.
6) Research - conduct one primary research project suitable for presentation at the Eastern States Residency Conference. A
project write-up will be required as well as presentation of results to key stakeholders. Pursuit of publication is strongly
encouraged.
7) Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee - conduct a medication use evaluation, prepare and present a monograph for a formulary
addition request or prepare and present a medication class review
8) Drug Information - provide concise and timely responses to drug information requests; review current literature to keep abreast
of new drugs, new indications, medication safety alerts, etc. 9) Writing Skills - drug information responses, chart notes, nursing newsletter submissions, meeting minutes. 10) Investigational Drug Services – understand management of investigational drugs according to established protocols and the institution’s policies and procedures. 11) Meeting and Conference Attendance

26) Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: PharmD Degree
Licensure, Certification, Registration: PharmD degree; letter of intent including goals; college transcript; curriculum vitae; 3 letters of recommendation; personal on-site interview.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Basic knowledge of drug therapeutics and performing pharmaceutical calculations; good oral and written communication skills, computer skills (word documents, powerpoint slides, excel).
Experience: Clinical experience commensurate with PharmD program requirements, fulfillment of internship hours.
