GENERAL SUMMARY: Assesses, plans, organizes and administers respiratory therapy diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with physicians’ treatment plans. Ensures operation and maintenance of all respiratory therapy equipment.
Job Description:
PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

2. Complies with all Winchester Hospital policies and the Code of Business Conduct. Maintains current license, life support certification, and tuberculosis testing. Takes responsibility for own safety as well as the safety of patients, patients’ family, co-workers, physicians and other customers.

4. Reviews, collects and evaluates relevant clinical data. Performs both basic and advanced therapeutic procedures for patients of all age groups from neonates through geriatrics.
5. Administers aerosolized medication.
6. Performs chest physical therapy including percussion, postural drainage, deep breath and cough training, respiratory muscle training and incentive spirometry.
7. Performs oxygen therapy including application, weaning, proper device selection and monitoring.
8. Performs arterial blood gas sampling including preanalytical, analytical and post analytical phases.
9. Provides airway management including deep nasal and oral suctioning, assistance with intubations, LMAS, Ambu Bag resuscitation these include equipment choice setup, monitoring etc.
10. Assists with inpatient bronchoscopes including setup, preparation of patient, monitoring, assists with instillation of meds, obtain pathology, micro and cytology samples. Develops requisitions for samples transport to lab for processing.
11. Performs overnight bedside sleep screenings and bedside spirometry
12. Acts as a Code 99 team member as well as in charge of evaluating the code 99s and reports to manager. Member of the Rapid Response Team
13. Performs ventilator care in Special care nursery including Surfactant instillation with MD and weaning from vent to CPAP therapy. Performs Noninvasive ventilation neonates including monitoring and weaning
14. Provides effective education to patients, families, students and co-workers as appropriate.
15. Performs emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with the quality guidelines in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
16. Provides required written documentation in clear concise language and in a timely manner.
17. Assembles, cleans, stocks, checks and corrects malfunctions, and performs quality controls on Respiratory Care equipment. Monitors and changes nitrous and nitrogen banks of tanks for operating room.
18. Participates in the hospital’s Tuberculosis Mask Fit Testing program. Performs fit testing procedures and provides necessary documentation.
19. Assists with arrangements for Durable Medical Equipment ordered for patients being discharged in need of respiratory devices. Prepares documentation, contacts provider and provides education for patient and families being discharged with such devices.
20. Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice.
21. Enters billing into the Meditech system for all services provided.
22. May also perform pulmonary function studies, inpatient/outpatient bronchoscopies, and pulmonary stress tests.
23. Participates in the following:
a. Mandatory training requirements as per hospital policy
b. Continuing education/in services to enhance knowledge
c. Staff meetings
d. Performance improvement initiatives
e. Orientation of new staff, students, and/or volunteers
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Associates of Science degree in Respiratory Care with Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials required.
2. Six months experience as a Respiratory Therapist in an acute care setting preferred.
3. Good clinical, communication and interpersonal skills required.
4. Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team desired.
5. Must possess good technical aptitude to understand and operate highly complex medical equipment.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Valid State of Massachusetts Respiratory Therapist License and/or limited permit that is registered or registry eligible.
LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support
AGE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Neonates, Infants, Children, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to access all patient care areas required.

OSHA EXPOSURE: Job does involve possible exposure to communicable diseases, blood, body fluids or tissues.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Reports to the Associate Director of Cardiopulmonary Services.
2. Not responsible for supervising the work of others.
Pay Range:
$37.70 – $56.03
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
