- The Director of Surgical Services provides 24/7 leadership and operational oversight for all surgical service areas, including the Operating Room, PACU, Endoscopy, Pre‑Admission Testing, Central Sterile Processing, scheduling, and inventory management. The position reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer.
This role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant patient care aligned with AORN, AAMI, TJC, and CMS standards. The Director collaborates with senior leadership, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing teams to drive strategic planning, optimize block scheduling and billing practices, and achieve organizational goals related to quality, performance, productivity, and workforce engagement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Department Oversight

Provide effective leadership for the following departments and roles: Nurse Managers (Operating Room, PACU, Endoscopy); Surgical Services Educator; Manager of Central Sterile Processing; Centralized Surgical Services Schedulers; and Senior Clinical Resource for Inventory Management.

Ensure the Surgical Services Educator addresses educational needs, including in‑service training for all equipment and products used across departments.
Clinical & Regulatory Expertise
-
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of perioperative and endoscopy nursing care in alignment with: AORN, ASPN, SGNA standards; AAMI, TJC, CMS regulations and recommendations
Surgeon Communication & Scheduling Optimization
-
Communicate weekly with surgeons and schedulers to optimize block time and meet inpatient and outpatient volume goals.
Operational Oversight
-
Oversee and manage: Data analytics and reporting; Productivity and budgeting; Contracts and equipment acquisition; Inventory control; Block scheduling; OR/Endoscopy billing; Business development; Position control; Process improvement and strategic planning
Business Operations
-
Direct business activities for Perioperative Services, including: Equipment management; Budgeting; Value analysis for new products; Purchasing contract review and collaboration.

Collaborate with surgeons on new product evaluations using Lumere and participate in monthly Value Analysis meetings.

Develop and maintain documentation and reports supporting operational and strategic hospital needs.
Scheduling & Block Management
-
Lead and mentor schedulers to ensure OR and Endoscopy block schedules are optimized and aligned with organizational priorities.

Communicate block schedule changes to surgeons and present updates at OR Executive Committee meetings.
Billing Oversight
-
Provide guidance on billing processes, ensure accuracy, and conduct regular audits to support continuous improvement.
Compliance & Policy Adherence
-
Ensure staff adherence to all hospital and unit policies, procedures, protocols, practice standards, and Nursing Practice guidelines for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and applicable regulatory agencies.
Committee Leadership

Organize and prepare agendas for monthly meetings of: OR Executive Committee; Endoscopy Committee; Robotic Committee; Surgical Steering Committee
Fiscal Accountability
-
Maintain fiscal responsibility by: Collaborating with the BILH system to assess current and future contracts; Analyzing products for cost savings and value optimization
Staff Leadership
-
Mentor and lead eight (8) direct reports within the Surgical Services Division, ensuring alignment with the hospital’s mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.
Customer Service

Promote excellence in customer and guest relations across all areas of responsibility.

Maintain competencies required for the specific patient population served.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.

Master’s degree in Nursing or a related field required.
Experience
-
Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Nurse Manager in Surgical Services.

At least three (3) years of clinical nursing experience within Surgical Services.

Operating Room nursing experience preferred.
Licensure
-
Current RN licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Strong knowledge of federal and Massachusetts regulatory standards for healthcare organizations.

Cognitive and technical expertise to manage care delivery across the continuum.

Pay Range:
$155,002.00 USD – $210,995.00 USD
The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
