The Executive Director, Communications leads the development of communications strategies for their assigned clients and serves as the primary interface between the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Communications Department and their clients’ executive and operational leaders.

This individual is a key strategic partner in supporting their assigned clients’ business goals. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, this individual supports client leadership in the development of business cases and/or subsequent integrated communications plans that utilize a variety of channels to support key business objectives and/or engage with target audiences, including employees, patients, prospective patients, physicians and the media. Convenes and collaborates with colleagues in multiple Centers of Expertise (COEs) within the BILH Communications Department to develop and implement plan components and support routine programs.

This individual maintains a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of clients’ organizational culture, business strategy, service offerings, operations, competitive landscape and financial performance, and builds strong relationships with administrative leadership, attending senior management meetings to identify opportunities to advance the client’s reputation, strengthen employee engagement and grow patient volume, as applicable.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 
1.    Builds strategic relationships with client administrative and clinical leadership, as applicable. Attends and actively participates in appropriate senior leadership meetings, providing consultation and guidance to inform communications priority-setting and decision-making.
2.    Identifies business challenges and communications opportunities based on detailed knowledge of clients’ organizational culture, employee engagement priorities, clinical service offerings, as applicable, competitive positioning, research and financial performance.
3.    Develops strategic communications plans in support of client priorities, including partnering with the client and the Strategic Planning department.
4.    Understands and develops communication priorities to engage with clinicians and staff, coordinates the development of Internal Communications strategies and support. 
5.    Interfaces with subject-matter experts in BILH Communications and BILH Marketing’s Centers of Expertise (Media Relations, Internal Communications, Social Media and more) to ensure appropriate support of clients’ day-to-day needs and business objectives.
6.    Ensures the development and presentation of performance analysis and reporting for communications campaigns to senior leadership.
7.    Oversees the communications teams’ timely support of client needs.
8.    Provides guidance and direction to activities performed by departmental staff in support of the clients’ business.
9.    Allocates and manages budgets.
10.    In the event the Executive Director has direct reports, has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, coaching, corrective action and performance reviews.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business Administration, or related field required. Master's degree strongly preferred.

Licensure, Certification & Registration:

Experience:

  • More than 12 years’ related work experience in health care or related field.
  • Leadership experience in large integrated systems and/or academic medical centers strongly preferred.
  • 3 -5 years’ supervisory/management experience required.
  • Experience managing communications resources (budgets and staff) and how they are best deployed.
  • Demonstrated experience addressing problems that are broad, complex and abstract, often involving system-wide issues and requiring substantial creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, negotiation and diplomacy to develop solutions.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Ability to set direction and vision for major departments or multiple departments. Establishes priorities and allocates resources.
  • Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of a major department or multiple departments. Participates in decisions on overall strategy and direction of the organization.

  • Ability to summarize and communicate moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information to staff, patients, families and external audiences.
  • Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex and/or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications, which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
  • Excellent market research, analytical, and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills preferred.
  • Strong skills to produce results and achieve predetermined goals within budget and time constraints preferred.

 

 

Pay Range:

$175,000.00 USD – $190,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
