Job Description:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager or the Director of Plant Operations, shall perform a variety of routine standard servicing and repair operations to hospital equipment, building, or plant accessories. These shall include the following:
- Repairs and maintains hospital equipment such as pumps, blowers, fans, compressors, motors and other general mechanical systems throughout the facility. Repairs and installs components to medical gas systems, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, nitrogen and compressed air.
- Repairs mechanical components of hospital beds, stretchers, chairs, tables and/or other patient related equipment requiring basic mechanical skills. Safety checks electrical items using in-house test meter after receiving appropriate in-service on the testing instrument.
- Has working knowledge of fire alarm system, nurse call system, emergency power distribution and other critical or life safety equipment.
- Maintains air handling equipment which may involve changing air filters, drive belts, bearings, shafts and lubricating components according to manufacturer's instructions. Constructs or installs walls, ceilings and flooring systems using typical construction materials such as metal studs, sheetrock, metal ceiling grid, acoustical ceiling tile, vinyl composition tile, carpet tile, etc. May also perform painting, demolition, fire stopping, and joint compound work.
- Makes repairs to kitchen equipment, dishwashing machines, dryers, autoclaves, refrigerators, blanket warmers, ice machines, etc.
- Plunges toilets and sink drains when necessary. Cleans and rebuilds steam traps, strainers, garbage disposals, flushometers, medical gas outlets, and similar types of equipment.
- Dismantles a variety of mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment to determine the cause of operating problem, and repairs and reassembles equipment. Plans and performs rigging operations to move and install materials and equipment.
- Unloads, lifts and may carry heavy materials or equipment as the job requires, using safe trade practices.
- Proficient with mechanical hand tools such as drills, saws, grinders, presses, wrenches, hammers, vises, micrometers, etc. Reads and records usage of water, gas, electricity, fuel, oxygen, and other gases according to standard maintenance schedule. Prepares reports and work orders in a complete and accurate manner.
- Obtains appropriate permits prior to working in high risk areas (hot work, infection control, fire ban-ier penetrations, etc.)
- Cares for and maintains department supplies, equipment and work areas.
- Shall assist the grounds person with property clean up, maintaining shrub beds, sweeping hospital entrances and other grounds related activities. It is anticipated that he may provide this assistance 1-2 days per week during the spring and summer months. The C Mechanic will be required to work scheduled evening shift or night shift performing maintenance repair work and perform routine inspections throughout the facility. Shall perform a complete building tour from penthouse to subbasement area, visibly looking for proper operation of all plant equipment. If able to do so shall reset, adjust or repair equipment to correct any defects found.
- Keep work areas orderly, clean and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies. Maintain established department and hospital-wide policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Prepares reports and work orders in a complete and accurate manner. Obtains appropriate permits prior to working in high risk areas (hot work, infection control, fire barrier penetrations, etc.)
- The night shift mechanic shall raise the flag prior to the end of the shift and the evening mechanic shall take down the flag, fold it appropriately and bring it to the maintenance department, placing it into storage for use the next day.
- Adherence to the standards of performance as outlined in the Standands of Performance Booklet as well as compliance with the hospital Code of Conduct is expected as a condition of employment.
- May be required to perform similar or other related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or senior management staff. Must perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures. The employee shall also maintain competencies that pertain to maintenance mechanic C classification that are necessary for the specific patient population served.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a trade school. Degree from a technical school desirable.
- Must have working knowledge of all maintenance trades including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, etc. Exposure to situations requiring a working knowledge of skilled contracting crafts and trades is a prerequisite.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position may also expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and to follow the universal precautions for infection control.
Pay Range:
$15.00 – $500.00
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
