The Nurse Specialist – Professional Development serves as a clinical expert, educator, and change agent responsible for advancing nursing practice, professional growth, and quality outcomes across Patient Care Services at BIDMC. This role supports the ongoing development of nursing staff through evidence-based education, competency assessment, and professional practice initiatives aligned with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and Magnet standards.
Working collaboratively with nursing leadership, educators, and interdisciplinary partners, the Nurse Specialist designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs that support onboarding, continuing education, clinical competency, and career development. The role also contributes to nursing excellence through engagement in quality improvement, research, and shared governance activities.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and support professional development initiatives for nursing staff across assigned clinical areas

Design, implement, and evaluate education programs, orientations, and competency-based training

Serve as a clinical and educational resource for nurses, leaders, and interdisciplinary partners

Support evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and regulatory readiness initiatives

Contribute to Magnet-related activities, professional practice councils, and shared governance

Analyze educational outcomes and staff performance data to drive continuous improvement

Mentor nurses in professional growth, certification, and career advancement
Clinical Practice & Quality Improvement

Promotes and integrates evidence-based practices into ambulatory nursing workflows and standards of care.

Analyzes quality and performance data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.

Collaborates with nursing leadership to support initiatives that improve patient outcomes, safety, and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Nursing required.

License Registered Nurse required
-
American Heart Association – Basic Life support Certificate required.

3-5 years related work experience required.

Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of successful work experience in nursing with two years in a specialty area.

Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification. Current Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license to practice in Massachusetts.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Pay Range:
$83,845.00 USD – $216,674.00 USD
The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
