Accurately, consistently, and efficiently receive and process outreach laboratory specimens. Act as a technical resource for the hospital’s laboratory services and provide phlebotomy services in outpatient setting. Collaborates with the PP&D Supervisor and Laboratory Section Supervisors regarding outreach related issues.

Job Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Competently perform all duties of a Phlebotomist as listed in the Phlebotomist job description (addendum to this job description) to ensure timely provision of lab services to patients. 
  • Maintain and adhere to all phlebotomy procedures, orders, and referral laboratory results as necessary to ensure conformance with government regulations, national standards, laboratory quality control, and all  hospital policies and procedures.
  •  Document variances, incidents, or significant findings through the hospital’s event notification system.
  • Provide initial orientation and ongoing training as necessary to personnel assigned to the outreach office.
  • Complete orientation and competency records as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Resolve LIS/, eCW and any other reference laboratory ordering, processing, and resulting issues.
  • Recommend to the Supervisor updates to the Policy and Procedure manuals regarding outreach changes to practice.
  • Schedule special phlebotomy procedures and any other BID- Milton related outpatient diagnostic services.
  • Coordinate courier needs of outreach clients to ensure timely pickup and delivery of specimens. 
  • Process referral laboratory results according to established protocol.  Ensure critical values are immediately called to appropriate patient care personnel per hospital policy.
  • Maintain a working inventory of supplies and equipment for the outreach office
  • Ensure department area is maintained in a hygienically safe and functional condition.
  • Perform all duties as needed to ensure timely provision of laboratory services to patients for all outreach offices. Consistently monitor equipment function and document information as required by Laboratory policy. Take corrective action as needed and document it.
  • Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person.  Assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource.
  • Maintain laboratory files and records as per policy.  Provide data to the Supervisor for QA and statistical reports in a reliable and timely manner.
  • Communicate lab procedures and policies to non-Laboratory personnel
  • Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing.
  • FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy.
  • Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities.
  •  covered by next sentence?Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.
  • May be required to work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call as is necessary to maintain laboratory services to the hospital.
  • Must maintain competency and be in compliance with standard operating procedures for pediatric/adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in compliance with laboratory, hospital, state, federal, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Min Education: High school graduate. Graduate of Medical Assistant program or degree/ credits in clinical laboratory science preferred  

Min  Experience: Minimum 1 year of applicable experience in a laboratory, including phlebotomy or as a Medical Assistant, including phlebotomy, in a physician office.

 Licenses or Certificates:  Nationally recognized certification in phlebotomy such as Nation Creditialing Agency for Laboratory Professionals (NCA) or equivalent preferred. Verified by primary source.

The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood or other potentially infectious material per OSHA definitions in OSHA document 29 CFR 1910.1030. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control.  A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description.  Also identified is the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is available.

Pay Range:

$21.00 – $28.26

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
