Under the general supervision of the Clinical Nutrition Manager, the Dietitian Specialist assesses the nutritional status and plans nutritional intervention for patients in their area of expertise, and for other patients within the hospital. Develops and promotes collaborative practices and collegial relationships with physicians and other disciplines as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team. Dietitian specialist may provide for care for both inpatients and outpatients, depending on the specialty.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 

1.    Adheres to the Nutrition Screening, Assessment, and follow-up –  Inpatient Policy.
2.    Uses the Nutrition Care Process (NCP), completes a comprehensive assessment patients admitted to the hospital or in the outpatient clinic, based on food and nutrition-related history; biochemical data, medical tests and procedures; anthropometric measurements, and nutrition-focused physical findings and patient history.  
3.    Orders (if privileged) or recommends laboratory tests needed to complete assessment.
4.    Calculates metabolic needs for energy, protein, fluid, electrolytes, and other nutrients.
5.    Selects appropriate nutrition diagnosis (es)
6.    Initiates nutrition intervention that is directed at the root cause of the nutrition problem and aimed at alleviating the signs and symptoms of the diagnosis.
7.    Monitors and evaluates response to intervention, ordering (if privileged) or requesting lab tests needed, to determine if goals are achieved or progress made toward goals.
8.    Documents assessment and plan of care using Standardized Nutrition Terminology and consult format in the electronic medical record. 
9.    Communicates with care team in development, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition interventions.
10.    Provides nutrition education considering cultural, religious, and ethnic beliefs.  Individualizes patient education based on age and health literacy.  Documents response to teaching by patient and/or family.
11.    Counsels patients on potential food/drug interactions.
12.    Collaborates with food service colleagues in the provision of meals and supplements.
13.    Coordinates care with case managers and home care companies for discharge planning.
14.    Maintains productivity log.
15.    Precepts dietetic interns.
16.    Participate in marketing and community outreach initiatives. 
17.    Participates in quality and safety initiatives.
18.    Educates dietitians, students, residents, fellows, and nursing staff on principles of nutrition in specialty area.
    

Minimum Qualifications: 
Education:    

  • BS in Food and Nutrition or related field 

Licensure, Certification & Registration:    

  • Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration 

  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure, Board of Registration of Dietitians and Nutritionists within 6 months of hire date

  • Specialty certification as applicable to position

Experience:    

  • Clinical experience in an acute care or outpatient setting providing care to adult and geriatric patients preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:    

  • Strong written and oral skills

  • Effective time management skills

  • Good computer skills, including the Google Platform

  • Effective networking relationships

  • Leadership and mentoring skills

 

 

Pay Range:

$32.55 – $48.37

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
