Laboratory Research Assistant I/II, VanderHorst Lab, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The Laboratory of Dr. Veronique VanderHorst at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (https://research.bidmc.org/veronica-vanderhorst) is recruiting a Research Assistant I/II.

The new member will join a team of Research Assistants and Associates, postdoctoral fellows and senior staff to work on studies that focus on structure and function of brainstem circuits that mediate walking, breathing, muscle tone and arousal and how neurodegenerative pathologies impact these circuits and their function. This is done in parallel but closely related mouse and postmortem human research lines.

Tools employed in the mouse lines include opto- and chemogenetic, fiberphotometry, conditional circuit mapping combined with EEG, EMG and plethysmography/gait assays to provide a physiological readout. For the human lines, we use standard and advanced staining tools, quantitative image analyses tools to extract data followed by integration with antemortem physiological readouts obtained through wearable devices.

Responsibilities will involve tissue preparation, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, digitization, semi-quantitative and quantitative analyses, data management, perfusions and assistance with physiological assays. The RA will work with senior staff on the development of new protocols and preparation of datasets for inclusion in manuscripts.

We are looking for a team member with excellent analytical and time management skills, who is comfortable working independently while at the same time being able to finetune work flow within a team setting, and who is able to provide consistent quality. The team research approach requires open communication and flexibility. Experience in Image J or QuPath, Excel, or Spike are strongly preferred.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Accurately and efficiently enters all required data from paper case report forms into the respective databases. Understands the data entry process (i.e. missing values, not applicable values, entering values from unknown dates, etc.).
  2. Enters and documents changes in the database via computer entry screens as well as written documentation of changes made to the paper case report forms as a result of a query or an unsolicited correction. Actively participate in wikidoc material creation and editing.
  3. Prepares, sends and resolves data queries for the clinical sites, records receipt and return of all queries from each clinical site.
  4. Actively participate in all educational projects within the team.
  5. Assist Director with complex scheduling requests and requirements. Assist with travel logistics/requirements for Director and related team members. Any other duties as assigned by Director.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree required in Degree in science-related discipline preferred.
  2. 1-3 years related work experience required.
  3. Careful attention to detail.
  4. Ability to problem solve.
  5. Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
  6. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  5. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

 

 

Pay Range:

$21.64 – $31.25

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
