Verify sample identification, acceptability of sample, assess integrity of sample, and appropriateness of order according to written procedures. Appropriately follow procedure for sample processing. Perform follow-up procedures on rejected/missing samples according to protocol.
Prepares specimens for examination and performs complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests according to established laboratory procedures. Uses automated equipment and instruments capable of performing tests simultaneously.
Performs and documents start-up, quality control, calibration, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and laboratory equipment per established laboratory protocols. Evaluates QC and calibration results for acceptability following established laboratory policies before reporting patient results. Assists with inventory management to maintain adequate supplies for patient testing.
Ensures accuracy of test results. Evaluates test results, enters test results into the LIS and reports critical/urgent test results to providers according to established laboratory policies. Reviews own work to ensure that all work products are accurate, consistent with standards, and produced in a timely manner.
Demonstrate ability to prioritize work by completing assignments according to written procedures without excessive waste within established turnaround times.
Assist as appropriate in teaching new colleagues and students.
Participates in mandatory and voluntary continuing education to stay current with developments in the field of laboratory medicine.
Completes all required competency assessments including the running and resulting of proficiency testing samples. Participates in QA/QI projects.
Serves as liaisons between Lab Support Services and technical departments and provides timely communications and resolution of problems to clients outside the labs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Baccalaureate degree with a concentration in science
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Not required but certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry or by American Medical Technologists (AMT) for Medical Laboratory personnel preferred. Once certified, promoted to Medical Lab Scientist 2.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Analytic ability to perform moderately complex tests, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate & troubleshoot instruments used.

Ability to identify and evaluate clinical testing problems and to effect corrective action procedures and modifications.

Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare specimens, screen specimens, prepare solutions, and operate instrumentation and a computer.

Ability to concentrate for long periods of time, utilize good judgment, work accurately under pressure and handle stress to met deadlines.

Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and other colleagues.

Work requires the ability to perform venipuncture techniques.

Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Experience: Preferred but not required.
Pay Range:
$36.00 – $48.45
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
