Participates in C/S deliveries as a scrub assistant. Maintains aseptic technique, properly handles instruments, and assist surgical team. Participates in the delivery of care to newborn, adolescents, and adult OB/GYN patients under the direction of the registered nurse. Is accountable for all patient care personally administered and other related duties during his/her shift. Promotes teamwork among co-workers, physicians, and health care team members.
Job Description:
Surgical Birth – Direct assistance is provided to the surgical team during a
surgical delivery. Sterile instruments are handled and aseptic techniques are
maintained during the case.
a. Prepares C/S room in acceptable time.
b. Utilizes physician preference cards and obtains appropriate equipment,
sutures, gloves, and supplies.
c. Maintains aseptic technique throughout the case
d. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to policy
e. Assist with prepping and draping according to procedure
f. Anticipates needs of surgical team
g. Demonstrates skill in proper handling of instruments
h. Performs counts according to MAH policy
i. Handles specimens and/or cultures according to policy and procedure
j. Prioritizes set up.
k. Conserves supplies and equipment.
l. Anticipates needs of surgical team.
m. Completes set-up according to accepted standards; i.e., neat, organized,
accurate.
n. Maintains organized back table.
2. Labor & Delivery – Under the direction of the registered nurse, provides
patient care in accordance with established policies and procedures. Reflects
an understanding of the knowledge and skill necessary to care for the
newborn, adolescent, and adult OB/GYN patient.
a. Assists with setting up for deliveries
b. Assists with stocking of Labor & Delivery rooms, C/S Suite, and all
equipment including birthing beds, radiant warmers, infant scale, and
transport incubators.
c. Assist nurse in obtaining necessary equipment and/or paperwork in other
areas of the unit and/or hospital.
d. Draws, labels, and delivers necessary blood work to the appropriate area
e. Organizes, rotates and restocks required supplies according to specifications.
Maintains an adequate supply of in-house stock in all areas. Provides a list of necessary outside supplies needed. f. Answers the telephone utilizing effective communication skills and relays and expedites the delivery of messages to appropriate health team member. g. Maintains necessary birth and admission logs. h. Crosstrain to other jobs within the department.
3. Demonstrates skill in preparing for assigned surgical procedures:
a. Consults with team members to identify individual patient needs.
4. Utilizes available resources (e.g., experienced personnel, policy/procedure
manuals, texts) to prepare for assignments.
5. Demonstrates resourcefulness when procedures are unusual or unfamiliar.
6. Collaborates with team members to improve/update preference cards or other
resource information.
7. Consistently focuses attention on the surgical procedure.
8. Communicates with team to promote smooth progression of procedure.
9. Practices and promotes electro-surgical safety: adheres to policy/procedure.
10. Gives thorough, concise report at change of shift or whenever relieved from
surgical procedure.
11. Respects patient's privacy.
12. Participates in annual OB Emergency Drills.
13. Assists with setting up vaginal deliveries, maintaining proper sterile
technique.
14. Acts as a resource to patients, families, and visitors upon entering the unit.
Exhibits professional behavior while providing customer service to all who
require assistance.
15. Participates in the orientation of new staff.
16. Functions as a liaison between L&D and all support services.
17. Maintains password access for all prenatal documentation systems and prints
prenatal record when L&D is informed that a patient is due to arrive.
18. Maintains and stocks the OB Hemorrhage Cart.
19. Maintains log book for blanket and fluid warmers. Places work order and
notifies the charge nurse when temperature is out of range.
20. Maintains necessary birth and admissions logs.
21. Assists in coordinating patient communication by answering call lights and relaying timely and accurate information to nursing staff.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. High School Graduate or equivalent
2. Successful completion of orientation to the above departments
3. Successful completion of birthplace operating room techniques
4. Basic Cardiac Support Certification
5. Complete MAH Annual Safety Program
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Normal hospital environment
2. Exposure to infectious diseases, chemicals, and other toxic agents
3. Ability to walk and stand for up to 90% of work time, to push and pull heavy weights (including patients), and to lift 50 lbs.
4. Fine motor control for limited periods of time to perform patient treatments.
6. Upper extremity demands include ability to perform data entry with repetitive hand movement, and visual concentration at video display terminal, to review and enter data
Pay Range:
$34.50 – $51.27
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
