The Assistant General Counsel will provide advice and counsel in a variety of areas, including general health care/regulatory law and compliance. In addition, the Assistant General Counsel will serve as a general support resource for the other attorneys in the Office of General Counsel. 

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel or Managing General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel (Health Care) oversees legal services provided by internal and external counsel to the administration, staff and other employees of Beth Israel Lahey Health and its subsidiaries (“BILH”). The Assistant General Counsel will have specific responsibility for the provision of legal services for certain of BILH’s academic medical centers, community hospitals, physician groups, behavioral health or senior health businesses, specifically related to health care matters. The Assistant General Counsel will represent the business units in matters directly related to the provision of health care services including, without limitation, contract review and negotiation issues, litigation and regulatory matters, transactions, compliance and regulatory issues, medical staff and credentialing issues, privacy, and patient issues.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:  

 

1. Directly provide legal services to certain of BILH’s academic medical centers, community hospitals, physician groups, behavioral health or senior health businesses and oversee the allocation of internal and external resources for legal services. 

2. Provide legal support to the business unit boards, management teams, and various physicians and faculty members in relation to relevant legal matters, regulatory and legal developments, contractual relationships, and other legal-related matters. 

3. Provide legal services across the BILH enterprise in the area(s) of the incumbent’s substantive legal expertise.   Serve as a department expert and leader in the designated area(s) of expertise. 

4. Negotiate and draft contracts and agreements including provider arrangements, and services and supplier agreements.   

5. Maintain current knowledge of relevant law and advise clients about the impact of recent regulatory and legislative changes and guidance.   

6. Participate in committees and assist in the development of BILH policies and procedures that raise relevant legal issues and affect BILH’s various business units. 

7. Support the corporate compliance program and providing legal advice related to compliance matters affecting relevant affiliates and clients.   

8. Make presentations both inside and outside BILH and conduct teaching sessions for medical and professional staffs and other employees regarding relevant legal issues. 

9. Work directly with outside counsel on issues requiring specialized legal consultation and serves as liaison with outside counsel on referred legal matters. 

10. Responsible for working collaboratively with the BILH legal group to ensure consistent delivery of legal services across the system. 

11. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with a lawyer with 5 or more years of experience in health care law and management. 

Education: 

J.D. degree from an accredited institution and proven ability to manage staff and matters with minimum oversight.   

 

Licensure, Certification & Registration: 

Admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Member in good standing. 

 

Experience: 

Minimum of 5 years of practice of health care law. 

 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: 

Proven ability to manage legal matters with minimum oversight. 

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:  

Law firm experience  

 

 

Pay Range:

$124,800.00 USD – $208,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
