Reporting to the Executive Director of Public Safety at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Director of Public Safety at Mount Auburn Hospital plays a critical leadership role in fostering a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative and strategic leader to shape and advance public safety operations within a highly respected healthcare organization. The Director oversees 24/7 public safety operations, partnering closely with hospital leadership and interdisciplinary stakeholders to assess risks, drive operational excellence, and implement comprehensive safety and security strategies that support the organization’s mission and values.

The Director is responsible for leading and developing a high-performing team, managing departmental operations and budgets, and promoting a culture grounded in professionalism, respect, inclusion, and service excellence. Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

(including but not limited to)

  • Lead, develop, and support a high-performing Public Safety team through effective hiring, onboarding, coaching, mentorship, and performance management practices that support employee engagement, patient experience, quality outcomes, and operational excellence.
  • Foster and model a culture grounded in collaboration, accountability, professionalism, inclusion, and respect, creating an environment where team members are empowered to grow, contribute, and thrive professionally.
  • Oversee 24/7 Public Safety operations across the hospital’s main campus, including staffing coordination, scheduling, payroll administration, and operational coverage to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Partner with offsite landlords and facilities leaders, as appropriate, to help ensure consistent public safety standards across all affiliated locations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization and within Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to assess organizational needs and implement comprehensive education and training programs focused on workplace safety, de-escalation, emergency preparedness, and staff support.
  • Develop and maintain programs, strategies, and processes that encourage organization-wide engagement in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming healthcare environment.
  • Partner with hospital leadership to maintain and continuously improve departmental policies, procedures, workflows, and protocols while ensuring staff education and compliance.
  • Lead and support ongoing operational and strategic initiatives, ensuring project milestones, quality measures, and performance objectives are achieved while incorporating industry best practices in healthcare public safety and security operations.
  • Conduct security assessments, threat and risk evaluations, and site surveys, providing recommendations that strengthen safety, preparedness, and operational effectiveness across the organization.
  • Respond directly, or through delegated staff, to emergencies, incidents, and disaster situations, collaborating closely with Facilities, hospital leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate effective operational response and support.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in utilizing financial and operational data to support strategic decision-making, budget planning, resource allocation, and departmental performance management.
  • Serve as a change leader in advancing a culture of safety, quality, and service excellence throughout the organization while supporting multidisciplinary quality and safety initiatives.
  • Ensure organizational readiness and compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards, partnering with stakeholders and leadership to proactively identify, escalate, and mitigate risk-related concerns.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary committees and operational meetings to align Public Safety initiatives with broader hospital operations and strategic priorities.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with external law enforcement and public safety agencies, fostering strong collaborative partnerships and effective communication.
  • Oversee relationships with Public Safety vendors and contracted service providers to ensure high-quality, efficient, and professional service delivery.
  • Partner with Parking Operations to address parking and traffic-related concerns across the campus environment.
  • Participate in regulatory and compliance-related activities impacting Public Safety operations and ensure departmental adherence to organizational and regulatory expectations.
  • Provide consultation, operational support, and resources to hospital departments and staff as needed to support a safe and secure care environment.
  • Recommend and implement operational strategies related to staffing models, scheduling practices, contracted services, investigations, contingency planning, labor relations, and other departmental operations to support efficient and effective Public Safety services

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree preferred.

5 years or more management experience leading a public safety function.

Advanced skills with Microsoft applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Demonstrated ability to remain nimble in action and communication and open to an ever-changing environment.

Proven experience utilizing process improvement methods, as evidenced by achieving desired outcomes.

Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities, manage multiple projects at various stages and work cross-functionally.

Must be able to resolve problems encountered while working collaboratively and effectively in teams, emphasizing communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience.

 

 

Pay Range:

$115,000.00 USD – $160,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
