Provides pre-analytic services such as client services, patient registration, and order entry, blood collection either at our blood collection stations or at the laboratory front desk. Provides independent office management and ABN generation.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patient Assessment
- Always assures proper patient identification with two identifiers (name and date of birth) and by comparing labels and wristbands.
- Always verifies outpatient order accuracy
- Determines appropriate collection devices
- Selects correct collection tubes to minimize blood volume collected
- Complies with defined age specific based standards
Technical Procedures
- Demonstrates competency by collecting patient samples on first attempt 95% of the time.
- Always adheres to laboratory protocols when performing all specimen collections.
- Demonstrates proficiency in caring for patients who require special care and treatments.
Post Specimen Collection
- Assesses patient overall status prior to releasing including proper hemostasis.
- Follows the triple check policy to ensure order accuracy which includes collector’s initials on each specimen labels.
- Reports all adverse patient events immediately to supervisor.
- Delivers all specimens to appropriate area for testing
Outpatient Services
- Greets and processes outpatients by adhering to all screening procedures such as always obtaining properly completed order forms and patient demographic information. Additional follow-up inquiries may be necessary
- Practices AIDET (acknowledge, identify, duration, education, thank you) customer service departmental standard
- Always greet patients with a warm friendly smile.
- Consistently opens and closes sites as scheduled and remains available for patients who present at closing.
LIS Proficiency
- Utilizes LIS effectively for result query, label printing, generating collection lists, generating and faxing patient reports, and order entry.
- Logs on and off LIS correctly. Never works under another’s password.
Patient Registration (required)
- Verifies patient demographic information with the patient when possible.
- Always enters and updates patient demographic information accurately.
- Matches collection date with date of service.
- Follows up with physician practices to obtain any missing information on test order forms.
Productivity
- Exhibits initiative by flexing to those tasks or areas where workload demands additional help.
- Understands and is prepared to respond to emergency activations per policy which include stroke alert, Code Blue, trauma stat, trauma alert and post-partum hemorrhage.
- Organizes daily blood collections in order of priority and does not batch ED blood draws.
- Manages off site inventory appropriately and within budget
Safety
- Always utilizes available safety devices to ensure personal safety and safety for others.
- Maintains collections centers so that they are clean and orderly.
- Reports safety concerns to management.
- Demonstrates knowledge of clean-up procedures of biological spills.
Education
- Completes all annual institutional and laboratory mandatory in-services by anniversary date
- Strives to keep current on job-related topics, safety and disaster procedures.
- Attends general laboratory and departmental meetings.
Leadership
- Demonstrates professionalism through example by strictly following established protocols.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively and independently with the ability to problem solve effectively
- Assists with training of employees

- Maintains HeartSaver or BLS. Medical Assistant graduate or successful completion of an approved accredited phlebotomy program preferred. National certification preferred.

Pay Range:
$21.00 – $28.26
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
