Reporting to the technical director, performs all cardiac ultrasound imaging exams and procedures in accordance with BIDMC policy and procedures and the ASE scope of practice. Acts as a day-to-day contact for sonographers and physicians for intradepartmental issues. Provides leadership in education for cardiac sonographers, fellows, students and clinicians to support the laboratory in imaging technology.Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Performs all functions of a Cardiac Sonographer III. (essential)
- Assists in the daily operations of the echo lab; acts as a day-to-day contact for sonographers and physicians for intradepartmental issues. (essential)
- Prioritizes inpatient echo requests, assigns studies where needed, and responds to/schedules urgent exam requests. (essential)
- Maintains schedule of teaching assignments and assists in clinical teaching of staff/student sonographers, trainees, and cardiology fellows. Provides assistance in the process of evaluating student and staff sonographers. (essential)
- Evaluates, reviews and updates content of training materials and courses on a regular basis. Researches and develops new programs, curricula, and educational products. Identify organizational needs, knowledge gaps and program goals. (essential)
- Leads workshops and training sessions for sonographers. Provides monthly feedback to sonographers in a constructive manner. (essential)
- Troubleshoots in the event of technical issues with machines. Contacts appropriate service vendors. (essential)
- Troubleshoots technical issues with echo reporting software. (essential)
- Participates in the maintenance of IAC laboratory accreditation. (essential)
- Communicates and discusses departmental problems to the manager. (essential)
- Maintains supplies for all campuses. Completes code cart and med checks as needed. (essential)
Required Qualifications:
- Vocational or Technical training in cardiac ultrasound.
- Basic Life Support RDCS (ARDMS) or RCS (CCI) certification.
- 5 years related work experience.
- Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology either through college level courses in biology and anatomy and/or relevant acquired experience.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree Graduation of an accredited echocardiography program

Teamwork: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over.
Social/Environmental Requirements:
Work requires close attention to tasks for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the workday do not compromise the work.
Work routine is fairly consistent, but employees need to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week.
Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions
- Daily: Protective equipment required (Respirator, earplugs, mask, gloves, eyewear etc), Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or airborne pathogens.
- Several times a month: Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or bloodborne pathogens.
Health Care Status: HCW1: Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department
Sensory Requirements:
Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity <3 feet, Conversation, Telephone.
Physical Requirements:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
This job requires constant Power Grasping using one hand, Fine Manipulation using one hand, Keyboard use, Pushing items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs, Endurance-working up to 3-4 hours without a break, frequent walking, standing, bending neck, bending waist, twisting neck, twisting waist, Pushing/Pulling using both hands, Reaching-above shoulder height, Reaching-below shoulder height, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 10 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 25 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 50 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 75 lbs. There may be occasional Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs., Pull up and/or reposition patient weighing up to 100 pounds without assistance, Pull up and/or reposition patient weighing up to 250 pounds with assistance, Push a wheelchair or wheeled bed containing a patient weighing up to 250 pounds, with assistance.
