The Executive Director (ED), Pathology, is an experienced healthcare leader and is responsible for all technical operational, clinical, and financial performance for BIDMC Pathology. The ED is involved with the oversight and implementation of a range of program initiatives for BIDMC Pathology to support BIDMC initiatives. The ED will work closely with the Pathology and hospital leadership to evaluate best industry practices and internal systems, with a focus on current operations & future growth needs. This position reports to the CAO, Pathology.

Job Description:

Job responsibilities:

1. Responsible for executing the BIDMC pathology strategic plan and initiatives in response to organizational driven imperatives. Assist in the development and implementation of strategic plans consistent with the organization’s goals that contribute to growth, revenue enhancement, and cost containment while maximizing productivity. Directly accountable to execute the strategy consistently in all practice settings.

2. Work closely with the CAO, in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures, programs and initiatives that support the mission, growth and success of the institution. Drive innovation with pathology services to support the future needs of BIDMC. Expected to lead, serve, and participate in various committees at the leadership level. Ensures and maintains effective communications between all levels of personnel.

3. Supervises and directs the work of all operational and quality pathology leaders at BIDMC. Plans, organizes, manages and evaluates all operational activities, programs, strategies, and initiatives designed to enhance and support pathology operations to ensure high quality, efficient and cost-effective operations.

4. Ensures appropriate staffing of pathology laboratories in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. Ensures appropriate hiring, training and

development of competent directors and managers. Promote policies and practice opportunities for team members to thrive and reach their potential while upholding the tripartite mission of patient care delivery, education and research.

5. Collaborate on development of hospital operating budgets and annual revenue and expense projections for pathology with pathology department leadership. Collaborate with HMFP/LSP Admin Director Pathology to coordinate future budgets to align with strategic growth goals and/or changes. Responsible for all financial targets and performance metrics in BIDMC pathology operations and services, including budget development and oversight.

6. Work collaboratively with medical staff and pathology medical directors to ensure pathology services effectively support clinical and patient safety initiatives of the system. Partners to ensure high-quality and timely diagnostic support and testing results.

7. Work closely with pathology leadership to implement and meet quality, safety and regulatory requirements and KPIs. Develop monitoring dashboards and report on the new and existing measures of activities and operations of the BIDMC pathology laboratories to ensure programs meet the goals of improved quality, efficiency, volume and patient/physician satisfaction. Ensures pathology practices meet federal, state and organizational regulatory guidelines and uphold requirements for CAP, JC, FDA, AABB, FACT and others. Work collaboratively with hospital quality and regulatory leaders. Responsible for all pathology laboratory statistics, and coordinates collection and preparation as required.

8. Identifies and recommends a course of action to pathology leadership for organizational and/or operational problems requiring intervention or resolution. Support recommendations for operational changes and ensures implementation and adherence.

9. Work with BILH and local teams for contracting, facilities, and other cross-functional departments and service lines to ensure uninterrupted routine operations and new projects. Works closely with information technology systems to ensure adequate technological support for ongoing and new initiatives. Collaborates with key stakeholders, contracting, facilities to implement and oversee capital project development and implementation, including improvements to existing and new lab build initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

1. Advanced degree in health care business administration (MHA, MBA or equivalent degree and experience) required.

2. Medical Technologist with ASCP, or comparable certification or bachelor's degree in biology preferred.

3. 7-10 years progressive management level related work experience required in pathology-related operations.

4. Experience in matrixed health care system preferred.

5. Ability to travel to off-site locations.
