Under the Direction of the Histology Supervisor and Anatomic Pathology Manager, the Lead Histotechnologist assists with oversight of Histology Operations

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Performs and oversees a full range of Histology tasks according to Standard Operating Procedures.  Ensures Histology staff follow Standard Operating Procedures.  Act as an expert resource within an area of specialty.
  • Assist Supervisor in maintaining effective Workflow and Histology Operations.  Reports issues to the Histology Supervisor, Anatomic Pathology Manager, and/or Director of Surgical Pathology as needed
  • Serves as a resource for assigned areas of expertise and provides technical support to staff. Assists in researching new workflows, performs instrument evaluations, writes standard operating procedures, and maintains supplies for their areas of expertise. Resolves technical problems and troubleshoots when test systems are not within established levels of performance.
  • Oversees periodic review of quality control and instrumentation logs to ensure accuracy of test results. Provides input into technical decisions, acts as expert for data collection and gathers monthly QC statistics. Functions as the technical on-call person for the off-shifts.
  • Demonstrates excellent skills at managing and directing workflow. Monitors the daily operations and delegation of duties within the lab. Reallocates resources as needed.
  • Train Histotechnologists I, Histotechnologists II, and Lab Support Assistants. Participates in the development of training and competency procedures. Instructs residents and fellows.
  • Serves as liaisons between Lab Support Services and technical departments and provides timely communications and resolution of problems to clients outside the labs.
  • Provides leadership in the absence of Clinical Supervisor and Managers. Represents the lab on committees. Provides input to managers for performance evaluations. Addresses personnel issues with the Clinical Manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 Years experience in a high complexity Histology Lab including special stains, Immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and/or immunofluorescence. 3 Years experience required for exceptional internal candidates.
  • Demonstrates autonomy, capability and capacity to lead multiple projects and assist with staffing needs under the direction of department leadership.
  • Experience and high proficiency with computers required. Web based application experience, Microsoft applications including excel experience required.  May be required to produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified  Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Associates or Bachelor’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited histology technician program or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or universityLeadership Experience

Written Communications: Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas

Oral Communications: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situations, resolve conflicts, negotiate motivate, and persuade others

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in complex situations and/or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas

Team Work: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization.

Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job: Medium Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently.  Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift
