BIDMC is seeking a dynamic Manager, Patient Safety and Risk Management to join the Silverman Institute for Healthcare Quality, promoting Just Culture and High Reliability. The Manager is responsible for overseeing the Patient Safety Team that includes Patient Safety, Risk Management, and Patient Relations staff functions. The solution-oriented operations lead immerses in daily activities of the Patient Safety Team integrating with clinical service lines, and optimizing workflow. They are proficient in process redesign and change management.

The Manager, Patient Safety and Risk Management works closely with the Director, the Senior Medical Director, and the patient safety team to design, develop, and implement patient safety activities to meet the requirements of the BIDMC Patient Care Assessment Program, MA Department of Public Health, MA Board of Registration in Medicine.
The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other regulatory requirements. The Manager plays an important role in guiding new and less experienced members of the patient safety team and serving as a resource across the department in areas of patient safety, legal, and regulatory matters.

Job Description:

. Supports the Director of Patient Safety in leading and mentoring Patient Safety and Patient Relations team members; particularly in the coaching and training of new patient safety staff members. The Manager serves as a resource in all patient safety, legal and regulatory matters required for the effective performance of all patient safety and risk mitigation at BIDMC.

2. Maintains current knowledge of BRM, DPH, TJC, and other regulatory standards and regulations; disseminates information to the appropriate individuals. Identifies accidental injuries and near-miss accidents through review of data from the BIDMC Incident Reporting System. Shares knowledge and experience to guide the work of patient safety team members to strengthen their skills in these areas.

3. Attends Morbidity and Mortality conferences for assigned clinical areas, as well as other meetings where patient safety issues are discussed. Identifies adverse events requiring intensive review by accessing the incident reporting system, attending M&M conferences, and communicating with the clinical staff at all levels of the organization.

4. Facilitates intensive review of significant adverse events; mentors junior team members in their development and understanding of this critical skill. Completes documentation of such reviews. Analyzes data utilizing informal or formal analytical methodology such as Root Cause Analysis and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. Recommends specific actions to eliminate or mitigate risk of patient harm.

5. Recommends process improvements. Collaborates with medical staff and hospital leadership to develop and assist in implementing action plans. Collaborates with QI Directors, nursing, and administrative leaders for assigned clinical departments. Advises and guides junior team members on the activities and collaboration required to develop effective strategies for implementing process improvement.

6. Provides staff support for the following committees: QI Directors, PCA Committee. Completes external reports as required under state regulation or JCAHO rules for assigned clinical departments. Responds to DPH, BRM, JCAHO, and QIO (MassPRO). Provides patient safety consultation for inquiries from physicians, nurses, or other healthcare practitioners and guides work of junior staff to do the same.

7. Performs as a Risk Manager with the Risk Management Foundation on loss control matters. Provides notice to CRICO/RMF of all actual or potential claims, assists in the investigation of actual or potential claims, counsel’s staff related to lawsuits and depositions, and coordinates responses to interrogatories and requests for production.

8. Analyzes, summarizes, and reports on patient safety activity to Clinical Services/Departments on at least a biannual basis. Communicates to the Clinical Chiefs specific patient safety data, as appropriate. Serves as a resource to Health Care Quality, Medical, and Nursing staff on matters relative to medical and patient safety matters.

9. Develops, plans, and conducts in-service educational patient safety activity programs. Maintains, implements, codes, and evaluates data of the Incident Reporting System. Provides in-service to all departments and units to educate and familiarize staff to the Incident Reporting System. May represent the Director of Patient Safety at BILH system-wide patient safety committee meetings or workgroups.

10. Provides in-service education on core curriculum in patient safety/risk management. Assists in complying with the Department of Public Health's Regulation for Hospital Reporting of Serious Incidents. Collaborates with QI Directors on preparing Major Incident Reports for the Board of Registration in Medicine. Provides consultation to Patient Representatives on patient safety issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other health profession required. Master's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • License Registered Nurse required.
  • More than 10 years of related work experience required in Patient Safety, Quality Assurance, Risk Management, and/or Claims Investigation, including extensive experience collaborating with medical staff and nursing leaders, and senior managers on the mitigation of adverse events and process improvement.
  • Five years minimum experience as a senior member of the Health Care Quality team with responsibilities for patient safety, quality assurance, and risk management.
  • Training in Just Culture and High Reliability Organization (HRO) methodology preferred.
  • CPPS, CPHRM, or CPHQ preferred.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications, which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access, and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis, and maintain databases.
