Job Summary: Under direct supervison, fabricates, fits, adjusts and removes mobilization and immobilization devices used in the treatment of a wide variety of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Applies, fits, adjusts and removes simple types of plaster and synthetic braces, casts, splints, and assistive devices under the supervision of an experienced orthopedic technician or referring physician.
  2. Educates patient or family / caregivers in safe, appropriate use of orthopedic appliances, wear and care of casts and splints.
  3. Sets up traction on inpatient beds, place patients in and remove them from traction. Performs traction rounds to insure proper patient positioning or to remove unnecessary equipment. Assist physicians in a wide range of sterile and non-sterile clinic and bedside procedures: removal of wires, pins, fixators; dressing or cast changes; traction adjustments.
  4. Oversees medical assistants or volunteers in support activities including assistance with patient care activities, maintenance of equipment, inventory and supplies. Maintains an inventory of orthopedic supplies and equipment in collaboration with Durable Medical Equipment (DME) suppliers.
  5. Performs administrative procedures such as billing, statistical reports, and maintenance of records. Participates in department activities related to Quality Assurance and performance improvement.
Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or GED required. Vocational or Technical training in orthopedic technology training program preferred.
  2. Certificate 1 Heartsaver Certificate (CPR) preferred.
  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  4. Ability to acquire knowledge of basic human anatomy and physiology and medical terminology through course attendance, independent reading or 1-2 years of work experience in a health related field.
  5. mechanical aptitude as indicated by skills and experience in machine work, handicrafts, art, device fabrication, etc.
  6. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  1. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little or no supervision.
  2. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are routine, somewhat repetitive and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures and by identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  3. Independence of Action: Ability to follow general instructions and procedures as provided. Work is monitored by supervisor/manager.
  4. Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.
  7. Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.
