Job Summary: The Public Safety Police Officer works under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor (Police Sergeants) for assigned shift. In conjunction with and under the direction of the Police Sergeants, the Public Safety Police Officer is responsible for ensuring work is performed according to departmental policies and standards. This position makes informed decisions, within established departmental guidelines, to serve the Medical Center community and provide a safe and secure environment for all patients, visitors and employees of the BIDMC community.Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:- Responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, planning, scheduling and incident response. He/she is responsible for maintaining community relations. Maintains a cooperative relationship with the Police Sergeants and the Public Safety staff. Exercises independent judgement.
- Protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. A police officer may be assigned to uniformed patrol, traffic control, crime prevention, investigative work, juvenile work, or other specialized departmental activity. Work involves an element of personal danger in the pursuit of duties.
- Responsible for responding to the needs and inquiries of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center community, and strives for a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors by providing security of buildings, grounds, and parking areas throughout Medical Center campus. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
- Patrols grounds and parking areas observing for violators, safety hazards, and unauthorized persons and may issue parking warnings and take other corrective actions for minor violations. Monitors access control, responds to calls for service, documents and responds to all unusual/routine occurrences as necessary.
- Provides feedback and input to Public Safety Supervisors to support improvement in key areas including, but not limited to, patient watches, crime statistics, security response times, restraint information.
- Responsible for promoting crime prevention amongst the security staff and proactive techniques to reduce crime, theft and loss of Medical Center property and work with other members of the Medical Center to reduce crime and create a safe and secure environment.
- Collaborates with key managers and directors throughout the Medical Center in establishing and facilitating a secure and safe environment. Works closely with the Safety Department, Radiation Safety, and Psychiatry, Emergency Department and Media Services.
- Assists clinical staff with patient restraints and transports patients to and from campus, designated areas.
- Conducts investigation of incidents and writes investigative reports. Attends court when presence is required to successfully prosecute an arrest or summons
- High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
- License MA ClassA Lrg capacity firearm required.
- 1-3 years related work experience required.
- Regularly meet BIDMC firearms qualification and police/BIDMC training standards required. Meet and maintain qualification standards set by State/Federal Govt, necessary for approval to access CJIS terminal points. Applicants must be a graduate of a Full-Time MA State Police Academy or Full-Time MPTC Academy or equivalent. At least 21 years old
- Appointees must be eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63 Massachusetts Class A License to Carry. Massachusetts Drivers License. Candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre-employment medical exam
- Flexibility and availability to work any shift including weekends/holidays required on short notice. Subject to frequent holdover and call back.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
- Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by precedents, policies and objectives. Regularly makes decisions and recommendations on issues affecting a department or functional area.
- Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.
- Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.
- Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
- Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.
- Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
- Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
- Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
