Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, MA is looking for radiation oncology medical physicist to join our team.

Our department is not a large but very dynamic and friendly group. Treatment planning systems are Eclipse with Aria OIS, Accuray Precision, and Brachyvision. You will join a collaborative and friendly team of 19 physicists and dosimetrists including one IT manager and one clinical engineer with four TrueBeams, a CyberKnife M6, and HDR and LDR brachytherapy programs.

In five years, Dana Faber Cancer Institute and BIDMC will transition to a brand-new collaborative cancer structure within the Longwood campus. We are looking for an innovator and challenger to promote medical physics contribution in cancer treatment. With a track record and/or specific plan, protected clinical development/research time will be allocated. A seed grant opportunity through a grant proposal process is annually available. Independent or participating in ongoing bioinformatic research (SBRT clinical outcome and radiomic studies, etc) in the department is highly encouraged. Experience in AI and deep learning, and clinically Cyberknife experience are pluses. There is also an opportunity for an intermediate level leadership.

Board certification or eligibility with a minimum part 2 pass for board certification is required for this position. Board eligible candidates must achieve ABR certification within three years of hire. A Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics or in a related field is required.

BIDMC is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. An academic appointment will be available. Our Radiation Oncology department is strong, experienced, supportive, and a collegial group to work with. The greater Boston offers beaches, trails along Charles River and in many mountains and Parks, four major league sports teams, many music concerts throughout a year, and happy hours at local pubs. Supports the ongoing mission of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to provide high quality, state of the art patient care including, but is not limited to, maintaining and supporting the present clinical programs and researching and delivering new or cutting edge technology to the department. Ensures an excellent Quality Assurance Program is maintained and supported throughout the department. Assists the Director of Physics in all activities including administration when needed. Performs duties requiring special training and having a high degree of complexity. Interacts primarily with internal physics and clinical staff.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participates in routine LINAC calibrations. (essential)
  • Performs routine clinical physics measurements (photon and electron) with assistance. (essential)
  • Performs state mandated annual machine measurements. (essential)
  • Responds to emergency request for machine measurements. (essential)
  • Participates in the ongoing quality assurance program. (essential)
  • Provides support to clinical physics activities (treatment planning). (essential)
  • Participates in departmental research activities. (essential)
  • In conjunction with the department's administrative director, optimizes billing and revenues. (essential)
  • Provides assistance to the Chief of Dosimetry and Biophysics conforming to state regulations. (essential)
  • Participates in billing procedures. (essential)

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Sciences required. American Board of Radiology preferred.
  • 3-5 years related work experience required.
  • Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

Work is varied every day and the employee needs to be adaptable to respond to these changes and use independent judgment and manage priorities.

No substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions

Sensory Requirements:

Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Monitor Use, Visual monotony, Visual clarity <3 feet, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone.

Physical Requirements:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

This job requires frequent sitting, standing.
