The Anesthesia Technician role is now eligible for a $5,000 sign on bonus. Important Details: Bonuses are paid out after 30 days ($2,500) and 6 months ($2,500). To be eligible, you must be a non-BILH employee. Employee must be in good standing to receive the bonus at the time of payment. All bonuses are subject to applicable taxes. Job Description:
Supervised and trained by the Anesthesiology Clinical Instructor and the Manager, Anesthesiology or their designee, the Anesthesia Technologist I (ATI) assists Anesthesiologists and CRNAs with the technical preparation for the induction of anesthesia and airway management.
The ATI will learn to prepare and maintain supplies and equipment used for administration of anesthesia and other related procedures. Once the ATI is proficient in performing the appropriate duties, the colleague will participate in the on-call rotation with a preceptor to receive exposure to advanced cases that have minimal daytime frequency. The AT1 will perform duties and responsibilities associated with call and meet all of the policy requirements under supervision. The preceptor will continue to support the AT1 until the colleague is ready for independent yet supported work.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
1. Assists with setting up anesthetizing locations with required equipment and supplies according to the type of cases and ages of the patients, not limited to high acuity, high risk patients. Becomes skilled at consulting with an Anesthesiologist or CRNA for specific setup needs as necessary or requested. Locations include but not limited to Operating Rooms, Interventional Radiology Suites, Neurointerventional Radiology Suites, CTI, Litho, EP Labs, Cath labs, MRI, and Endoscopy, Pulmonary, PET Scan, CT Scan and Radiation Oncology.
Some areas require additional equipment and setup with an EPIC connection as they do not have a permanent anesthesia setup. The ATA I is trained to set up equipment for use in the work area such as, but not limited to, connecting input and output hoses, bronchoscopes and assembling breathing circuits. Gains knowledge of the delivery process of anesthesia equipment as needed. Trained to set up IV solutions, transducers, medical pump tubing and all required equipment for cardiac monitoring. Educated on performing leak testing, calibration replaces 02 sensors and flow sensors of anesthesia machines. Gains experience in troubleshooting and service corrections, change tanks on machines and C02 absorbent canisters as needed. Cleans anesthesia machines and other anesthesia equipment after each case to meet operating room target times.
2. Assists with the preparation of blood pressure transducers and calibration to the appropriate machine. Becomes skilled at the functionality of various hemodynamic monitoring systems. Learns to perform cardiac output injectate process and reports numeric to the provider. Enters all patient data for calculations. Follows the calibration sequence for SVO2 catheters. Learns proper set up of non-invasive cardiac output monitoring systems, entering all data and aseptically assembling kit.
3. Assists the Anesthesia staff in the set up and initialization of hemodynamic monitoring equipment including arterial lines, central venous catheters, PA catheters and TEE. Learns to assist anesthesia providers with arterial line and central line placement. Gains knowledge about each kit available at LHMC. Based on case type and provider directives, learns to follow proper patient sterile prep procedures, open kits using sterile technique.
4. Assists Anesthesiologists with the care of patients before, during, and immediately after anesthesia which involves the following: transfer of patients from stretchers to operating table; attachment of vital signs monitoring equipment; position and hold patients for procedures, i.e., spinal, epidurals; assist in endotracheal intubations by preparing and holding equipment. Learns to assist Anesthesiologists and CRNAs with airway management, including set up of fiberoptic scope, LMA, single and double lumen tubes, jet ventilation system, atomizer and topical solutions for awake intubation. May assist with cricoid pressure during rapid sequence induction. Assists with transport monitoring of critically ill patients to intensive care units.
5. Observes and begins to learn testing, set up and process of autologous blood products for reinfusion. Observes packaging, labeling and reporting to the Anesthesiologist the volume, estimated blood loss (EBL) and returned processed unit volume.
6. Assists with the set up of prime rapid infuser systems and maintenance of aseptic technique.
7. Assists with the set up and preparation of Anesthesia machines for malignant hyperthermia cases, including install of appropriate filters, replacement of absorbent, removal of vaporizers, running of ventilator at appropriate settings for recommended period of time.
8. Trained in conducting performance tests, performing calibration and first level repairs (i.e. battery changes, cable swapping and monitor checks) of anesthesia equipment.
9. Participates in troubleshooting of routine problems with equipment in OR during use, repairing or replacing as necessary.
10. Begins education on High Level Disinfection processes.
11. Incorporates LHMC Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.
12. Complies with all LHMC Policies.
13. Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and LHMC.
14. Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
15. Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
16. Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.
17. Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.
18. Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.
19. Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent education and experience
Licensure, Certification, Registration: None
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: In the absence of any of these skills, demonstrates the ability to learn the organizational standards.
Experience: Up to one year of hospital experience preferred.
