Critical Care/PCU Clinical EducatorPosition Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the Associate Chief for the Center for Clinical and Professional Development, the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, the clinical educator practices within the Lahey Clinic Professional Practice Model, MA Nurse Practice Act, ANA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and demonstrates Lahey Clinic’s core values that reflect its Mission. The Clinical Educator promotes excellence in nursing practice by providing expert nursing care to patients and functions as a clinical/educational resource to nursing staff. The nurse-patient/family relationship, continuity of care and accountability are central to the delivery of individualized high quality patient care.
The Critical Care/PCU Clinical Educator facilitates the coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrates safe practice within the domains of:
- Clinical judgment and decision making
- Nurse-patient/family relationship
- Clinical leadership
- Clinical scholarship
The Critical Care/PCU Clinical Educator provides direct and indirect care to patients in collaboration with other health care team members. The Clinical educator maintains a current level of knowledge and skill with technical procedures as defined by nursing specialty organization complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies and is currently licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a registered nurse.
The Critical Care/PCU Clinical Educator will work primarily with the following Departments. LHMC is a Level 1 Trauma, Transplant and Comprehensive Stroke Center
Neurosciences Critical Care ICU: a 6-bed acute intensive care area specializing in the care of acutely ill patients with life threatening neurologic disease or life threatening neurologic manifestations of a systemic disease. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 throughout all shifts. Using the latest technologies, nursing staff provide care to patients requiring ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring, ICP monitoring, targeted temperature management, osmotic therapy, in addition to providing support and comfort to the families of these patients.
Neurosciences Progressive Care Unit: 12-bed acute progressive care area specializing in the care of acutely ill patients with life threatening neurologic disease or life threatening neurologic manifestations of a systemic disease. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:3 throughout all shifts.
Surgical ICU: 24-bed intensive care unit with 6 beds dedicated to the Cardiothoracic PACU (CT PACU). Nurses in the SICU are specially trained to care for post-transplant patients and other post-operative patients. As well as trauma patient at the acuity of a Level 1 Trauma Center. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 depending on the acuity of the patient throughout all shifts. Nursing staff provide care to patients requiring ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring, ICP monitoring, CRRT, and IABP, in addition to providing support and comfort to the families of these patients.
Medical ICU: 12-bed critical care unit focused on the medical management of critical ill patients. Nurses in this unit utilize ventilatory support, hemodynamic monitoring, and CRRT. Pre-transplant liver patients and critical pulmonary illness are the primary patient population. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 depending on the acuity of the patient throughout all shifts. The MICU nurses are adept at titrating multiple drips and are keen observers of minute changes in their patients’ status.
Coronary Care and Intensive Care ICU: Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The CCU/ICU is a 16-bed acute critical care area that focuses on the care of patients with cardiac disorders, hemodynamic challenges, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and hepato-renal failure. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 depending on the acuity of the patient throughout all shifts. The CCU/ICU Nurses are a highly trained team that specializes in cardiac devices, ventilatory support and life-saving measures. Additionally, patients may require therapeutic hypothermia, CRRT, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump, and Ventricular Assistance. The CCU/ICU nurses are adept at titrating multiple drips and are keen observers of minute changes in their patients’ status.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Master of Science, Nursing or equivalent advanced degree in health related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience in order to have full understanding of Nursing Education functions.
BSN Required and active MA RN license
2 plus year of Critical Care experience required. PCU experience preferred.
