Job Profile Summary; Assists the Pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of prescription medications in either the InPatient Hospital setting or OutPatient retail Pharmacy setting. Helps fill orders for patients and ensures they are delivered to the correct InPatient unit or accurately provided to the patient or customer in the OutPatient retail setting. Displays a full understanding of medication distribution operations and demonstrates competency in carrying out all duties associated with medication distribution.

Job Description:

 Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1. In conjunction with other Pharmacy Technicians, ensures that all medication distribution functions are completed in a safe and timely manner.  Informs Pharmacist and/or the Supervisor of any workflow issues.  

2.  Repackages and compounds medications as needed, in accordance with departmental procedures

3.  Maintains appropriate inventory levels in specific area of practice by rotating stock, checking for expired medications, informing the Pharmacy Buyer when inventory levels are low, and checking in wholesaler order.    

4. Answers telephone calls, triaging requests and taking steps to resolves questions received or concerns and problems.  

5.  Actively participates in continuous performance improvement activities of the department, including providing suggestions on how to improve day-to-day operations.

6.  Helps the Pharmacists ensure that the Pharmacy has the right amount of stock to meet patient needs.

7.  Performs the duties and responsibilities of one or more Pharmacy specialty areas, including Infusion Center, OR, receiving, etc.    

8.  Incorporates Lahey Hospital and Medical Center Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.    

9.  Complies with all Lahey Hospital and Medical Center Policies.   

10.   Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and LHMC.    

11.    Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.    

 12.   Demonstrates an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.     

13.    Demonstrates a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers. Consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.    

 14.    Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.    

 15.    Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.    

16.      Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.    

Minimum Qualifications: Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must be a Registered Technician or Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy and PTCB certified or a Pharmacy student in good standing with Mass. internship license. 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Knowledge of standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing and dispensing of medications. Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to handling and distribution of controlled substances and hazardous materials preferred. Experience with electronic medical records preferred.

Experience:  

At least one year of Pharmacy experience including sterile compounding and/or retail experience.
