The Manager, Anatomical Pathology, directs the daily operations of the anatomic pathology laboratory. Oversees budgeting, staffing, training, and performance management. May perform specialized technical duties based on qualifications in cytotechnology, histology, or as a pathologist assistant.Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities
- Participates in the establishment of policies, procedures, methods, and techniques for the anatomic pathology laboratory, and implements same as approved; assists in maintaining regulatory compliance
- Works collaboratively with other areas of the Laboratory operation to achieve department's annual goals. Recommends and participates in Continuous Improvement activities on an ongoing basis.
- Prepares Anatomic Pathology department for regulatory compliance, including but not limited to CLIA, Massachusetts, CAP and TJC. Ensures department is compliant with accrediting agencies’ standards throughout the year.
- Supervises daily operations and ensures quality control through regular review and monitoring of test procedures, results, etc.
- Interviews, selects, and supervises section staff; assists in training and evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
- Prepares work schedules to ensure effective coverage of the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory.
- Ensures training and competency assessments are completed to satisfy regulatory requirements.
- Orients new employees to the department, including safety training and emergency preparation.
- Completes performance reviews in a timely manner. Addresses employee concerns and suggestions to maintain high team morale. Acknowledges good performance and coaches staff who are underperforming. Ensures all corrective actions are performed with guidance from Human Resources.
- Assists in the preparation of the operating budget and manages same in conjunction with the Laboratory Administrator to ensure that expenditures are within allocated funds.
- Assist with supply ordering. Strives to keep supply expenses down through constant monitoring of minimum inventories and waste reduction.
- Monitors and submits Quality Improvement data monthly to Director, Laboratory & Pathology, with the goal of continuous process improvement.
- Responsible for the Pathology computer applications. Develops and designs reports; meets all requirements of accrediting agencies and maintains system in collaboration with the Laboratory Information Systems Supervisor.
- Troubleshoots and maintains equipment; contacts service for repair as needed.
- Oversees billing of all Pathology procedures including Medicare Part B billing procedures. Manages work queues in Laboratory Information System to reduce insurance claim denials.
- Reviews all attorney requests for slides/reports and discusses such with the Director of the Laboratory and/or the Laboratory Manager prior to release.
- Keeps abreast of developments in the specialty area(s) of responsibility investigates new methods, procedures, etc.; and recommends application as appropriate.
- Maintains regular contact with nursing, medical staff, and outreach clients regarding interpretation of reports and recommendation of proper specimen collection procedures.
- If qualified as a Cytotechnologist, Screens, diagnoses, and refers to the supervisor and the pathologist, for non-gynecologic and atypical gynecologic cytology smears according to established criteria.
- If qualified as a Cytotechnologist, Perform adequacies for Fine Core Biopies/EBUS/EUS procedures.
- If qualified as a Cytotechnologist, Assists the pathologist at fine needle aspirations in the CT/IR by preparing and staining slides for rapid interpretation.
- Assists when needed in various methods of cyto-preparation, staining, and cover-slipping for cytological specimens and ability troubleshoots same.
- If qualified as a Pathology Assistant, assists with gross examination duties.
- If qualified as a Histologist, assists with tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and H&E staining.
- Prepare and send out specimens for referenced cytological testing, IHCs and flow cytometry testing.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Required Qualifications
- B.A. or B.S. degree. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent preferred. Master’s degree (e.g., MBA, MHA, MHSA, MPH) preferred.
- Five years of experience in field of responsibility, with one year in a supervisory capacity. Experience as a Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist, or Pathology Assistant preferred.
- Certification (e.g., ASCP) preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, analytical ability, and ability to function independently.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to infectious disease and to possible carcinogenic chemicals.
- Minimal exposure to caustic agents, acids, and fumes.
- Occasional prolonged standing and walking.
- Works under constant time deadlines.
- Performs data entry with repetitive hand movement, and visual concentration at video display terminal, in order to review and enter data.
- Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations.
- Uses protective equipment as described in the Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Requires exposure to power tools and heavy equipment.
- Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation.
- Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed to prevent injuries to self.
