LEAD INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN_MAH

Job Description:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 1.      Assigns and coordinates daily responsibilities of technicians in the instrument assembly, decontamination, sterilization, chemical and biological monitoring, surgical case cart system, and storage and distribution areas. 

a.       Orients and evaluates all technicians.

 2.      Assists manager/supervisor with CSR technician evaluations, corrective action, and documentation of training. 

 3.      Ensures current knowledge of instrument technicians; collaborates with the Education Department and Operating Room to evaluate the educational needs of instrumentation staff regarding procedures and care of equipment; instructs and supervises personnel of new/renewed procedures and techniques involving sterilization and care of equipment; orients the instrument technicians to specialized and new technical equipment. 

 4.      Maintains teaching manuals to educate the instrument technicians according to manufacturers' directions and A.O.R.N. standards. 

 5.      Ensures adequate stock of all necessary supplies and maintains equipment.  Assists supervisor in coordination of purchasing/inventory activities. 

 6.      Meets with the sales representatives and the manager/director to evaluate and recommend purchases of new instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.

 7.      Maintains kit lists and updates accordingly, in collaboration with Operating Room staff. 

 8.      Inspects and organizes reprocessing of specialty instruments.

 9.      Consults directly with Operating Room staff to identify their sterile processing needs. 

10.     Monitors cost-containment initiatives and makes recommendations for change. 

11.     Orders equipment for new, broken, or misplaced instruments, and ensures that equipment is sent to manufacturers for inspection and sharpening.

12.     Utilizes computerized systems including Meditech and MSM to improve work flow of department. 

13.     Instructs and assigns duties and responsibilities to volunteers in the department. 

14.     Addresses problem situations with manager/supervisor and follows up as necessary. 

15.     Participates in various departmental and hospital committees. 

16.     Maintains infection control standards by performing quality control checks including hazardous chemical monitoring, instrument assembly procedures, and sterilizer equipment performance to assure patient safety.

17.     Identifies emergency protocols when failure of sterilization systems occur (ETO, Sterrad, Steris) to ensure safety of patients and staff. 

18.     Coordinates with patient care team to assure availability of all appropriate surgical supplies and equipment to prevent patient care delays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 1.  Knowledge of instrument sterile processing normally acquired through a brief period of intensive training after high school, to ensure proper processing of instruments.

 2.  Certification IAHCSMM

 3.  CRCST and CIS required

 4.  Two years of experience to ensure familiarity with instruments and their processing.

  5.   Must have full command of the English language.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Physical demands include standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting objects, for the majority of the workday.

2. Some exposure to infectious hazardous materials.

3. Exposure to high temperatures.

Some exposure to carcinogenic gases.
