The Public Safety Management Program is followed to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. All shift activities are coordinated to ensure compliance with department policies: monitoring of officer response, documentation, and adequate staffing levels. Rapport is established with the hospital community, and they are encouraged to actively participate in the loss prevention program. Under the general direction of the Director of Public Safety, is responsible for the day-to-day functions and operations of the Public Safety Department.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to): 
1)    Management of Supervisors and Staff:  Oversees the day-to-day functions of Public Safety Supervisors, Lead Officers, Public Safety Dispatchers, and Public Safety Officers including but not limited to the protection of all patients, colleagues, and visitors within the facilities. Makes sure that all assignments are completed at all times. Makes decisions, solves problems, and provides effective solutions to conflicts, to provide efficient service.
2)    Compliance:  Ensures that policies, procedures, quality assurance, and customer service standards are followed. Participates in the development and implementation as well as the monitoring of all department policies, procedures, technical guidelines, and quality assurance standards.  Ensures quality performance, customer satisfaction, and adherence to the requirements of regulatory agencies.
3)    Human Resources:  Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing levels, interviewing, and employee relations.  Responsible for the completion of staff Performance Appraisals, Competence Assessments, Compliance, and Mandatory Education. Counsels and disciplines assigned staff as needed, preparing proper supporting documentation and recommending changes in personnel status.
4)    Staff Training & Education: Identifies the training needs of staff and ensures the delivery of mandatory certifications and in-service training programs. Coordinates department onboarding, orientation, and training.  
5)    Fiscal Accountability:  Recommends departmental budgets.  Evaluate equipment and make recommendations for capital expenditures. Operates within the allocated funds.
6)    Interaction with Department Supervisors:  Responsible for ongoing interaction with department managers and supervisors concerning their requests for services provided by the Public Safety department.  
7)    Communication:  Conducts ongoing monthly staff meetings, keeping the staff up-to-date as to the information pertinent to their job functions. Acts as a resource for all department managers, supervisors, etc. with questions or concerns relative to the security of their areas. Inform the Director of any concerns regarding staffing, employee relations, scheduling, inter-departmental issues (i.e.; Nursing, ORs, etc.), or anything else involving security or colleague safety concerns.
8)    Customer Service:  Responsible for ongoing interaction with department managers and supervisors as well as patients and visitors concerning the security, parking, and transportation issues relevant to their areas and the overall patient experience. Maintains positive posture, and polite, and respectful communication with patients, families, visitors, and other employees as indicated by the Director’s observations. 
9)    Accountability: Exercises independent judgment and demonstrates leadership skills necessary for efficient and effective operation of the Public Safety department. Holds all reports accountable to all organizational and departmental standards of performance. Capable of assuming a formal leadership role in the absence of the Director. 
10)    Documentation: Reviews all applicable Safety Reports and daily activity logs on a daily basis and takes the appropriate follow-up actions. Completes and submits all annual and ad-hoc Security risk assessments and quarterly/annual reports. 
11)    Time Management: Ensures all Security personnel effectively utilize Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar. Ensures on-duty Security personnel create, modify, and adapt detailed shift plans with clearly communicated priorities. 
12)    Productivity: Carries out routine quality inspections to ensure all duties are being performed by all Public Safety personnel on all shifts, including but not limited to patrols, door checks, work order requests, lock-ups / unlocks, policy enforcement, identification badge production, fire prevention rounds, posted details, Lost & Found, etc.
13)    Scheduling: Coordinates and monitors all scheduling activities, ensuring the creation and posting of a fair, balanced, and equitable work schedule for all Public Safety personnel. 


Organizational Requirements:

  • Maintain courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our customers and consistently adhere to Customer Service standards.
  • Participate in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.  
  • Participate in and successfully complete all Mandatory Education. 
  • Perform all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent security/safety education and experience in the criminal justice/law enforcement field. 
Licensure, Certification, Registration: A current valid driver’s license is required. Ability to pass and maintain certification in CPR and First Aide. Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) within one year of hire. 
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:  Observant, paying close attention to detail; Ability to remain calm in difficult situations; Adaptable to sometimes rapidly changing situations; Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across diverse cultures and at various social and educational levels.  Advanced computer and data entry skills.  In the absence of a particular skill, a colleague must have the ability to be trained to a level of proficiency.
Experience:   5 years of Public Safety /Security / Law Enforcement leadership experience required.

3.    Lead Officers and Public Safety Officers     Provides guidance and ensures accountability. 
4.    Public Safety Admin, Specialists, and Liaisons      Collaborates with for planning and execution of necessary day-to-day Security functions and operations.
5.    Directors, Managers and Supervisors    Communicates and interacts with others as needed to ensure all Security needs are being met. 

Work Schedule:  Hours of work may be subject to change based on the needs of the business/department.
