The Public Safety Management Program is followed to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. All shift activities are coordinated to ensure compliance with department policies: monitoring of officer response, documentation, and adequate staffing levels. Rapport is established with the hospital community, and they are encouraged to actively participate in the loss prevention program. Provides leadership and supervision on assigned shift. Responsible for coordinating shift plans, making operational decisions, communicating with Public Safety personnel, and reporting all safety/security incidents.Job Description:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Provides direct supervision of Public Safety personnel. Conducts detailed shift change meetings and (Roll Call) shift briefings, assigning all on-duty Public Safety personnel specific tasks and responsibilities for their work hours. Responsible for modifying shift plans and assignments as needed based on available resources and identified priorities. Monitors, addresses, and evaluates the job performance of all on-duty Public Safety personnel. Reports any and all performance concerns to the Director of Public Safety to ensure accountability. Ensures quality of work (patrol procedures, report content, and desk duties), documenting unsatisfactory performance for review by the Director of Public Safety. Complete a "Summary of Shift Activity" for each shift supervised. Assists with preparation of department payroll and associated documentation as needed. Ensures cost-effective operation and monitors uniforms, radios, keys, and other department equipment to ensure compliance with department standards. Makes recommendations for utilization of department budget to maximize efficiency.
- Fosters a commitment to professional advancement. Understand standards for Public Safety Officer and works with officers to ensure they are able to meet or exceed standards. Recommends corrective action to ensure appropriate employee performance. Reports exceptional performance of duties by officers, as indicated, based on input from non-departmental sources and personal observations. Encourages officers to take advantage of all department-sponsored meetings, educational, and training sessions. Assists with preparation and presentation of performance evaluations.
- Ensure a positive public relations demeanor, maintain a positive posture, polite, and respectful communications with patients, families, visitors, and other employees as indicated by Director’s observations. Communicates with officers, dispatchers, hospital supervisory personnel, employees, and the nursing supervisor to ensure smooth interaction and assistance as rendered, as required. Makes decisions, solves problems, and provides effective solutions to conflicts to provide efficient service.
- When serving in an on-call capacity, must be available to respond to all calls, texts, and emails from on-duty personnel and must be available to come into work to fill unexpected shift vacancies.
- Carries out all of the regular duties and responsibilities of a Public Safety Officer and/or Lead Officer when necessary for maintaining successful shift operations. Conducts on-campus safety details when appropriate for a variety of safety/security concerns.
- Responds and supervises responding Public Safety personnel during all emergency situations and requests for Public Safety assistance, including but not limited to medical emergency team activations, resuscitation activations, missing/wandering patients or visitors, suspected infant/child abduction, fire and smoke incidents, elevator entrapments, thefts, chemical spills / unknown substances, radiation contamination, civil disturbances, weapons/hostage/armed intruder situations, agitated/disruptive/combative patients, workplace violence events, and any other potential crisis situations. Administer nasal Naloxone in the timeliest fashion to suspected opioid overdose victims when needed, while activating an emergency medical response. Protects against threats relating to gunshot and weapons-related trauma violence spill-over, including when victims of weapons violence and suspected perpetrators of weapons violence are present in the ED, ICU, OR, etc. Notifies and communicates with Nursing Leadership and/or the Administrator on Call (AOC) as needed, and takes responsibility for ensuring incident reports are submitted and notifications are made to Public Safety Leaders for all variances.
- Safety Searches: Conducts emergency contraband searches of patient rooms and property, taking possession of any discovered weapons, needles, substances (like Fentanyl), and other items presenting an immediate risk to life safety.
- Provides comprehensive Public Safety services for the Mount Auburn Hospital campus, including the main facility at 330 Mount Auburn Street, 300 Mount Auburn Street, Parsons Building, Clark Building, the East and West parking garage facilities, and all parking lots. Ensures the Public Safety Daily Activity Report (DAR) is maintained and completed with accuracy, documenting all routine patrols and safety/security issues and findings for all facilities and the grounds. Acquires and maintains knowledge of all buildings, including all inpatient and outpatient units, clinic areas, pharmacies, mechanical rooms, elevator machine rooms, stairwells, roof access areas, card access readers, panic alarm devices, fire panels, and fire extinguisher locations through regular patrols. Ensures all Public Safety personnel on duty are knowledgeable of the facility and provides additional training and education as needed.
- Maintains a professional presentation at all times while on duty (clean and pressed uniform, ID badge highly visible on outermost layer of clothing, positive attitude, approachable demeanor, etc.) and communicates professionally with the public, patients, visitors, colleagues, and coworkers, as well local Police, Fire and EMS and other external agencies. Makes necessary notifications to Public Safety leadership, MAH superiors, and administrators when necessary, following command protocols.
- Deliver timely notifications to the Engineering department and AOC, etc., when inclement weather procedures are in effect, and provide assistance as requested.
- Develops and maintains expertise in all security systems, including On-Guard, ID badge production, surveillance, panic alarms, access control, emergency calls, radios, Safety Reporting System, Daily Activity Report, dispatch, etc., and trains / educates all Public Safety personnel on the shift as competent end-users.
- Leads on policy enforcement efforts related to parking, identification, restricted areas, screening, mandatory personal protective equipment, smoke-free campus, etc., and ensures Public Safety personnel are proactively carrying out enforcement.
- Ensures all required routine patrols, directed patrols, unit rounding, door unlocks / lockups, door checks, and patient safety watches are completed as assigned.
- Assumes accountability for ensuring the lost and found is checked each shift, and all necessary related investigations and email communications take place in a timely manner. Ensures patient belongings protocols are followed and also takes responsibility for organizing and auditing the Public Safety safe and found items storage units.
- Provides preventative monthly equipment checks relating to security systems and wayfinding as assigned, conducts all Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) inspections during periods of renovation and construction, and as assigned by the Director of Public Safety. Conducts targeted patrols of roof access points, stairways, and other strategic areas as assigned.
- Creates and maintains a fair and equitable work schedule of Public Safety coverage for the assigned shift and communicates the work schedule to all Public Safety personnel with as much advanced notification as possible. Responsible for ensuring minimum staffing levels are maintained with consistency across all seven days of the work week, including weekends and holidays. Proactively reports all scheduling concerns and hardships to the Director of Public Safety or the designee for assistance. Monitors all Public Safety personnel’s attendance and timeliness and reports all absences and tardiness to the Director of Public Safety or the designee for tracking and accountability. Ensures all attendance records are kept accurately, with actual start, end, and mealtimes recorded for all Public Safety personnel.
- Maintains full knowledge of fire alarm systems and their operation, manual fire alarm boxes, fire extinguishing equipment, shut-off valves, standpipes, explosives, flammables, and pressurized gases. Communicate with engineering, emergency management, safety, and contractors regarding fire safety zones and evacuation routes/procedures. Communicates with local firefighting personnel and serves in a leadership role during any fire alarm activations and/or smoke, fire, and hazardous materials incident responses, and ensures incident reports are completed and submitted along with notifications to Public Safety leadership, the AOC, etc.
- Functions in a leadership role during all restraint incidents, ensuring appropriate levels of Public Safety intervention are followed and necessary orders are obtained for any use of restraint. Follows up to ensure incident reports are completed and submitted in a timely manner and all colleagues involved in the incident are named in the report, along with their job titles and departments. Contact the Nursing Supervisor, AOC, etc., to request incident debriefings as needed, and is able to refer any colleagues experiencing emotional or physical trauma following an incident to support resources including the Employee Assistance Program. Serves as dedicated safety detail for patients presenting homicidal ideations and actions. Forensic Patient Management: Orients external law enforcement personnel on MAH safety procedures and protocols. Responds and assists external law enforcement with de-escalation, restraint, etc. Assumes direct observation and custody of the forensic patient if external law enforcement is incapacitated.
- Coordinates and conducts all new hire security personnel training in collaboration with the Security Training and Compliance Specialist. This includes and is not limited to internal and external patrols, review of all security emergency response procedures, Safety Report writing, Security Log entries, Lost and Found protocols, patient valuables and patient belongings procedures, morgue process expectations, dispatch/desk responsibilities, security systems knowledge, parking systems knowledge and ID badge production.
- Ensures all record keeping and logs are maintained and incident reports are completed. Inspect all Public Safety areas and assume responsibility for all Public Safety property, radios, keys, and record keeping of such by all Public Safety personnel.
- Completes annual performance appraisals for all assigned Public Safety personnel by all communicated deadlines. Ensures all assigned Public Safety personnel complete all required education and training modules and courses by all communicated deadlines, including BILH MAH’s annual mandatory education.
- Organizational Requirements:

- Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education.
- Participates in all Public Safety Department mandatory in-service training requirements.
- Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in the criminal justice/law enforcement field or equivalent experience in a security environment.
- Valid Massachusetts driver's license with proven safe driving records in all weather conditions.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good decision-making ability in stressful/emergency situations.
- Ability to pass and maintain certification in CPR / First Aid (first responder) and AVADE (Workplace Violence Prevention Training).
Physical Requirements & Environment:
Exposure to occasional dangers of assault and hazards resulting from response to alarms and other irregularities, including bomb threats, disasters, fire/alarms, etc., or violent behavior of others. Exposure to outdoor temperatures and weather conditions at various times.
