The Sustainability Program Manager will play a key role in advancing sustainability initiatives across the organization. This position will support the development, implementation, and evaluation of sustainability programs in alignment with BILH’s strategic priorities. The role involves engaging with various stakeholders to integrate sustainability into operations, policies, and culture while staying informed about emerging best practices and innovative approaches in healthcare sustainability. All initiatives aim to minimize the environmental and public health impact of all hospital activities, including patient care and research, in order t serve our patients compassionately and effectively, and to create a healthy future. They will provide expertise in areas, such as climate action, resource management, responsible procurement, sustainable food systems, and resilience planning. This role requires strong change management, facilitation, coordination, and communication skills to build engagement and drive progress within a complex health system.

This person will take a lead role in implementing sustainability initiatives at multiple BILH entities. The role will collaborate with across Beth Israel Lahey Health to develop scalable sustainability programs, establish foundational frameworks, and replicate successful initiatives across multiple institutions.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: 
•    Champion sustainability as a core organizational value by embedding sustainability principles into the culture, operations, and strategic decision-making across the health system. 
•    Ensure the financial health of the organization by demonstrating the financial value of sustainability initiatives, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and aligning sustainability efforts with operational efficiency and long-term financial planning. 
•    Support the planning and execution of sustainability programs and initiatives that align with BILH’s system-wide sustainability objectives.
•    Collaborate with hospital leadership, department heads, and key stakeholders to develop and integrate sustainability strategies into operations, policies, and decision-making processes.
•    Provide guidance and technical support to sustainability-related working groups and committees.
•    Identify and assess opportunities for operational improvements, including reviewing proposals for new sustainability initiatives and supporting their implementation.
•    Assess opportunities for improving sustainability performance, including reviewing proposals for new initiatives and supporting implementation efforts.
•    Track, analyze, and report on key sustainability metrics in partnership with relevant departments, supporting data-driven decision-making.
•    Develop educational materials, resources, and training sessions to engage staff and leadership in sustainability efforts.
•    Work with Internal Communications to raise awareness of sustainability initiatives and share progress across multiple platforms.
•    Ensure compliance with sustainability-related regulatory requirements and assist in external reporting efforts, including award applications and benchmarking.
•    Identify and support funding opportunities, including grants, partnerships, and incentive programs to advance sustainability goals.
•    Maintain strong documentation, strategic plans, and reporting practices to track progress and measure impact.

Minimum Qualifications: 
Education:    Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Env. Eng, Urban and Regional Planning or related field

Licensure, Certification & Registration:    N/A

Experience: 3-5 years’ related work experiences required in the successful management of sustainability programs 

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
-    High degree of initiative as a self-starter and the ability to act as a team player.
-    Strong management skills with an open, constructive, and collaborative approach to working with colleagues.
-    Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others who are not direct reports.
-    Able to influence others and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including supplier management teams, legal, communications, and marketing.
-    Able to effectively manage multiple high-priority assignments and meet firm deadlines.
-    Comfortable with public speaking, training, and education, including presenting to diverse audiences.
-    Able to plan and implement successful communication and engagement campaigns to advance sustainability initiatives.
-    Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to engage with stakeholders inside and outside the organization.
-    Knowledge of environmental and health regulations and standards (e.g., EPA, DOT, OSHA) and sustainability-related compliance requirements.
-    Understanding of corporate carbon accounting and natural resource management, including energy, water, and waste reduction strategies.
-    Ability to analyze data, evaluate program outcomes, and recommend actions for continuous improvement.
-    Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills; must be process-oriented.
-    Able to effectively and sensitively oversee highly visible or controversial projects, managing competing priorities while ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and budget alignment.
-    Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize personal work and work of collaborators.
-    Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, Teams, and other digital collaboration tools for data tracking, recordkeeping, and project management.
