Job Description:

Job Summary: Reporting to the Manager of Admissions, the Admissions Clinician provides clinical review of cases referred for admission to the inpatient behavioral health units, clinical acceptance of admissions and coordinates the admission process for accepted patients. Communicates with referring agencies and hospitals. Identifies cases in need of medical review and works closely with the Doctor on Call to obtain that review. Provides triage and assessment of walk-in patients to an appropriate setting for further assessment.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Clinically reviews the electronic medical record or clinical referral paperwork received for referrals from other hospitals and other referral sources to identify patients appropriate for admission to one of the inpatient behavioral health units.

2. Reviews cases as needed with a manager, senior leadership, or the administrator on call.

3. Identifies cases in need of medical review and facilitates review by the Doctor on Call.

4. Ensures that the electronic admissions board is complete and maintained/updated throughout each shift, as needed.

5. Ensures that every effort is made to obtain insurance verification and pre-authorization prior to admission for each patient.

6. Maintains effective communication with referral sources

7. Provides brief assessment of “walk-in” patients who arrive to the hospital to determine if the patient can safely be referred to a Community Behavioral Health Center (CBHC) or if they require transportation via Section 12. Support and implement administrative decisions.

8. Provides resource information for follow-up to patients who are unexpectedly discharged from the Admissions Department, following an evaluation by the provider in the Admissions Department.

9. Solidly understands and follows the expectations and guidelines of regulatory agencies such as DMH, DPH, Joint Commission, payors, etc.

Education, Experience, & Licensing Requirements:

· Master’s degree in social work, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, counseling, clinical mental health counseling, education (counseling), marriage and family therapy or other related field required

· Prior experience in a behavioral health setting preferred

· MA professional licensure not required, but preferred

Skills/Qualifications:

· Clinical knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses and conditions

· Some knowledge of medical comorbidities as they relate to treatment needs and accommodations

· Knowledge of admissions procedures and protocols

· Knowledge of managed care and other payors

· Able to effectively triage patients
