To accurately, consistently, and efficiently perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical activities required for laboratory testing in Coagulation, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and/or the Transfusion Service per standard operating procedures for pediatric/adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in compliance with laboratory, hospital, state, federal, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and standards.Job Description:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Receive and review requests and specimens for appropriateness and acceptability per policy for the tests/procedures requested. Reject all unacceptable specimens and document according to policy.
Prioritize work to ensure specimens are processed in a timely fashion. Perform tests for which there are established procedures and for which competency has been determined to be acceptable. Analyze test results, interpret abnormal and unusual results (i.e., QC failures, delta failures, questionable results) and notify supervisor appropriately. Evaluate/verify results according to established protocol prior to result release. Investigate, prior to release, any unexpected results. Report all critical and STAT values immediately to appropriate patient care personnel and document according to policy.
Maintain section supplies and equipment. Assist supervisor to ensure adequate volumes of supplies. Receive, prepare and determine suitability of reagents in accordance to procedure. Assist the supervisor in adhering to budget by monitoring the use of supplies, materials, reagents, etc. and report wasteful conditions to supervisor. Maintain equipment to ensure that it is functional per operating procedures. Troubleshoot problems. Maintain appropriate section logs.
Train/educate new staff on section procedures under the direction of the supervisor.
Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
Comply with established policies and procedures, professional standards and practices and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies. Take appropriate action to resolve incidents of non-compliance. Document per policy.
Perform phlebotomy as needed to ensure timely provision of laboratory services to patients > Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person. Assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource.
Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing.
FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy.
Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, in-services, workshops, outside conferences, additional courses, and/or professional affiliations. Participate in in-service education activities.
Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities, > Perform job functions in a manner that promotes the safety and health of Milton Hospital co-workers, patients, and visitors in Milton Hospital.
Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department manager or supervisor.
All job functions are subject to change at the discretion of the Hospital Administration. May be required to work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call as is necessary to maintain laboratory services to the hospital.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses or Certificates: Nationally recognized certification such as American Society for Clinical
Laboratory Professionals (ASCP) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLD or Nation Creditialing Agency for Laboratory Professionals (NCA) as a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) or equivalent preferred. Verified by primary source.
Education, vocational training and experience:
Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or qualified as a technician per 42 CFR 93.1489b Verified by primary source.
At least 2 years prior experience as a laboratory technician in a similar environment.
Skills and abilities:
Perform basic laboratory procedures.
Consistently follow standardized procedures. Organize work to meet established deadlines.
Understand method principles.
Do intermediate math.
Interpret results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.
Exercise independent judgment within boundaries of knowledge and skills.
Reason analytically and independently act on the decision within boundaries of knowledge and skills.
Communicate effectively and be clearly understood by telephone and in person.
Possess above average customer service skills.
Accurately and completely document according to policy and procedure.
Write legibly.
Possess basic computer skills.
Perform tasks over long periods of time with sufficient endurance.
Interact and provide care appropriate to the population of the patients served.
Maneuver throughout the hospital.
Teach/train others with successful outcomes, Proficiency or productivity standards:
Maintains departmental competency.
