Beth Israel Deaconess Milton is seeking a full-time, Grossing Technician.

Position Function: The Grossing Tech reports to the Pathologist/Pathologists’ Assistant.

This position is 40 hours per week, full-time, day shift

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of a Pathologist/Pathologists’ assistant performs all technical aspects of receiving, accessioning, labeling, dissecting and dictating of biopsies, routine and non-complex specimen
Follows established protocols for the appropriate selection and submission of specimens for processing
Specimen pick-up from OR, endoscopy and other areas deemed necessary
Ensures appropriate labeling of all specimens
Recognizes errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel; assist in problem resolution
Ensures quality, consistency, accuracy and efficiency of specimen prosection
Assist pathologists with frozen section as needed
Load and operate tissue processors as needed
Performs all technical aspects of grossing, dissecting and dictating of surgical specimens using a variety of laboratory materials, chemicals, and equipment according to hospital policies and procedures
Performs other routine technical procedures and general laboratory, gross room, frozen section room and morgue maintenance
Maintain a clean and well organized work area
Maintain surgical specimen storage area in a clean and organized fashion
Maintain a safe working environment
Disposes bio hazardous waste, maintains chemical waste storage area in accordance with all hospital, local, state and federal guidelines
Maintains temperature/QA/maintenance logs
Maintain, order and stock inventory supplies
Prepares specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples and other matter for send out
Retrieve, document, package, and send out of slides and blocks
Receive, sort, verify, and file slides and blocks
Answers telephone, relay and record messages and/or answer questions
Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed
Minimum Education: A.S. degree or equivalent training and experience.

Preferred: B.S. degree

Qualifications:

Ability to handle high-pressure situations.
Solid working knowledge of the major functions of the department in order to provide the results defined by executive management.
Thorough knowledge of key pathology principles including anatomy.
Skill in effectively working with all levels of the organization.
Skill in communicating and collaborating both orally and in writing.
Ability to make independent decisions.
Ability to effectively problem solve issues.
Ability to maintain the necessary levels of confidentiality to protect client’s privacy and proprietary organizational information.
Ability to perform and adhere to scheduled competency examinations.
